A friend (yes a friend and not me) has been given promotion and a new title, as well as more work/different work and responsibility. With the promotion the friend has also been moved up a grade according to in-house HR rules and in line with the promotion.
My question is should my friend also expect a pay increase?
The company don't seem to think so but my friend does.

Nope, not unless they stated that he would get one.

Its up to the company and their contract. Seems to me like they are giving him a poncy title instead of a pay rise.

Does the company in question have set rates for each grade?

If so, he could possibly raise a grievance - if not, it would probably have been down to negotiation before he signed on the line

Not unless they said so up front. He's probably on a probation period to see how he shapes up in the job. Once the probation is completed he will be in a stronger position to ask for more money.

If jobs are graded they will be covered by a range of salaries and it's probable that the new job is still in the same salary range as his old one.
