Hi,
It seems that my yahoo account has been hacked yesterday as all of my contacts received an email from 'me' claiming I had just bought a iPad from a great company very cheaply. This has never happened to me before so i have no idea what to do and how to stop it. Do i need to drop that email account now and make a new one?
Cheers.

Reset your password?

change your password to a more secure one, then change any other websites which you used the old password on too. Your old password was insecure and was guessed or beaten brute-force.

Happened to me on xmas day last year and as a software engineer I should have known better. I slapped myself on the wrists and learnt a valuable lesson.

Oh and an apology email to your contacts might be a good idea

Seems to be a bit of this. Got one from Olly from Blazing's last night advertising weight loss pills or something.

Change your password to something that has both letters and numbers, and if you use the same password on other sites (Facebook, Play) make sure that you change it there too.

First thing - if you use the same password for anything else, change those too - especially if you use paypal or similar!

Recreate you email address book, they deleted mine as part of there 'hack', and apologies to everyone.
Mines been fine since (2/3 months), I assume I logged onto a pc with a trojan & they got it that way.

i had a similar thing with my skype account recently, cost me £40 in stolen skype credit (i got some of the £80 they spent on my credit card back)

I then changed my password on every single website i have a secure logon for, took me ages but thank god for firefox's view password list!

i had mine hacked after a holiday in thailand. I suspect one of the internet cafe computers had a key logger installed.

Change your password, run a malware scan on all PCs where you access your mail. www.malwarebytes.org is, as ever, your starting point. Tell us if it finds anything and we can advise further.

If you've logged in on an infected machine since changing your password, change it again. Pick a secure password (capital letters, numbers, symbols) rather than "dave" or something.

A good trick for memorable secure passwords is to think of a phrase, say the first line of a song, then take the initial letters. Eg, "rudolph the red nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose" => "rtrnr, havsn". Obfuscate this a little, and you've got "$Rtrnr,h4v5n" - easy to remember, and complex enough to give brute force / dictionary attacks a hard time.
