Say a portable radio that you can plug in and use mostly use in that way, but occasionally take to the bathroom, garden etc.

What's the best way to use them to get the most life out of the batteries?

That would depend on the type of battery and whether or not it was charging the batteries when the mains is connected.

So a lot of variables...

portable radios use far less juice on FM than DAB, so if you're walking around with it switch it to FM if you are not on a DAB only service.

As footflaps says it would depend on the battery type and how intelligently the charging circuit works.
