Ive been using electric share scooters in NZ and im well impressed.  A bit expensive but passes are available for frequent users which makes it cheaper but so convenient and easy to use. I do find it funny tho that NZ cyclists have to wear helmets and most wear hi viz and are very risk averse but these scooters seem to be a free for all. Some have helmets attached you can use but no one does.

I also spoke to a chap who gad had spent time in San Francisco where self driving electric cars are used.  He said they are becoming ubiquitousÂ

I'm more convinced than ever they are the future of urban transport and will make car owning in cities just fade away..
Is it the share (i.e. rented) aspect or just the scooter aspect?
From visiting a number of cities that have both scooter hire and e-bike/regular bike hire - the scooters are by far the better option for short journeys.
With the advent of self driving cars and flexible working, I can really see a future where most folk don't own cars, they just rent as needed from a central bank of them. I know that both of our cars spend 98 if not 99% of the time being driveway or car park ornaments. It'll be the death of yhe car industry in its current form though.

There are no Scottish trial sites for scooters. There was a bike (not sure if electric?) scheme in Edinburgh but it lost money and closed, they have plans for an ebike scheme. I am told it only stops charging your credit card if the bike is returned to a rack (not necessarily the one you got it from) to stop the abandoned bike issue. To be fair though, we have abandoned cars (including rentable but the half hour car club cars) all over the roads and nobody seems to complain they are clogging the place up...Does Edinburgh not have a electric scooter or bike scheme? The Edinburgh scheme did try e bikes for a short time before it folded.Â

I like the convenience of the schemes here. You can park anywhere mostly but you take a picture of the scooter to show you have parked it sensiblyÂ
