To replace a 25 year old, superb, Black & Decker rotary.

Probably another rotary, unless you can now get a really decent, close cut with a hover.

Bosch?
Got one of their hedgetrimmers, well made, good kit.

Flymo?
Replaced the matching 25 year old strimmer with a Flymo one - ok, not mad about it.

Qualcast still any good?

Any other suggestions up to about 150 quid, preferably less, welcome.

Bosch with li ion battery or two depending on how big your lawn is. If you can wait until the end up summer get one in the b&q summer sale

Don't bother with the battery jobs, go Rotak corded. Largest rotor size you can afford.

Yep, that's why you need to wait until the sale!, about 40% reduction. But so much easier than p!ssing about with cables

The Rotak is good but the grass box is rubbish, holds very little.

I got a flymo, It was quite outstandingly....rubbish, unusably so.

Got a Bosh Rotak following recommendations on here a few years back. Can't fault it.

Yeah the neighbors have one - they borrow my Bosh if they actually want to cut grass 🙂

Apart from having plastic!? blades, the big fail on the flymo is that when it tries to cut deep grass, the blade slows, so the thing sinks meaning more load, so it just enters a downward spiral.

yes its called 4 stroke.

i like my qualcast suffolk punch - its 15 years old - could use a sharpening of the blade but still gives a decent finish.

New Flymo I got from B&Q last summer is brilliant.
I'm a lazy gardener so always have to tackle grass about 8 inches high and it handles it easily. And the suction action clears up every last blade (almost) into the collector.
Obviously not a mower for the snobs, but works a treat

Similar flymo to the one above. Good bit of kit. Goes over the lumps and bumps in our lawn. Does very long grass. Collects the lot. Had a plastic blade one before that was rubbish. Need to have the metal blade.

Bosch Rotak. The only thing I'd change about ours is to get the cordless version.

Withersea, are you using a cordless Bosch? If so, how's it going and how big's your lawn?

That's funny - was just about to post a link to the flymo 300. There's 3 height adjustments, metal blade, grass collects well, folds away very compact with no fiddle bolts etc. the cable could be a bit longer but that's about the only complaint really.

Got mine for cheaper at Argos.

Bosch Rotak

Just bought a 32R for £60-ish quid from B&Q. The models scale up depending on size of garden.

Has anyone mentioned Bosch yet? Mines probably 6 years old now and still shows no sign's of dying (damn did I really just say that), and been throughly abused.

BUY BRITISH.

I'm going to be tedious and agree with everyone else on here. Buy a Bosch Rotak, made in GB!

Oh and it cuts the grass ok too. But be careful not to kill the grass by setting the blade too low like I did

Have you seen the amount of Flymo's down the tip or for sale as spares/repairs in Ebay?

I wouldn't be touching them personally.

Yes shifter using a cordless bosch, in Tue summer clear two lawns about 15m x 10m on one battery. First cut of the year normally takes two batteries due to grass length. Anything I'd like to see change? Imbecile be good it the cutting height was a bit lower. Overall much better than any petrol mower I had before. Although they were all sub £200 and not in the same league as a Suffolk punch!

[runs out to check what the battered thing in the shed is]

A Bosch something or other! Must be 10 years old at least.

I'm on my 3rd or 4th Bosch Rotak, they're ok, but only last 2-3 years then the motor dies. You can often get 40% off if you hunt around, Screwfix / B&Q / Homebase will have an offer on the 36 or 40cm model at some point.

What do you do with them 🙂 Mine's over seven years old and still going strong.

how big is your garden? if it's not that big you could get a hand push mower, or if it's a decent size go for a petrol

🙂 typical STW answer that eh, tell him about something he pointedly didn't ask for
'Electric Mower recommendations please?'
'how about some cheese or a photocopy of the mona lisa? no?'

Bosch Rotak abuser here. Cuts through 2 ft wet grass and cuts very close to the walls & fences, hardly have to use the strimmer.

Thanks for the reply Withersea. I have about 200m2 so that sounds good.

For the folk who've recently bought a Flymo - my Compact 400 is falling apart now after 14 years, I think that's reasonable reliability.

Ta for the advice folks.

Looks like Bosch then.
Need a leccy one as the MiL might be using it too!
She still has 5% vision left, what could possibly go wrong?

Ed, trying to get hold of you.
Can you give us a call.

I really liked my Bosch, cracking value for money - the grass box capacity increses as you go up the range so it really is worth getting the biggest you can afford. I only got rid of mine as the new lawn is too big for an electric to be practical

Anyone got the 37 inch version of tbe Bosch?

One customer review says this is an exclusive model to one or other of the big chains and not up to the quality of the other Rotak models.
Wondered why it was so cheap.

Yep I've got the 37cm after my last 40cm one died. It's pretty much identical to the 40, just was on a silly offer when I bought it and the 40 wasn't. NB I've since seen the 40 at roughly the same price, so just wait for the deals to change.
