My mum died just before Christmas leaving my dad on his own. He has had a stroke a few years ago which meant he all but lost the use of his left hand. Being a stubborn so and so he is insisting on staying in the house which means a certain amount of self sufficiency. I'm trying to find a one-handed electric can opener so that he can at least get into "Big Soup" cans etc. Got one of Amazon and it was shite despite some good reviews although the bad ones mirrored my experience.

So hive mind, can anyone recommend me? Cheers.

Look for your local shop selling stuff for the disabled or online?

for example.  I haven't used these or this company.

I’ve got a Culinare One-Touch, which is very efficient. I’ve tried a number of different can-openers, a couple used to be really good, but the cans seemed to change and my favourite one, which allowed the top to be lifted off cleanly just wouldn’t work anymore, plus many cans now are ring-pull. My late stepfather had difficulty opening cans, so I bought a Cullinare One-Touch battery opener, a bit like a computer mouse, and it’s brilliant! So long as it’s located on the top of the can correctly, which isn’t difficult, one press of the button and it works it’s way around the lid, then backs up and stops, taking the lid with it. Made me laugh first time I used it, because it just worked better than any other can opener I’d used.
