Thinking about a few days in the Eifel region of Germany this month for a centre based round cycling break
does anyone have experience of where would be a good place to base ourselves :?Aachen
also are there car free cycling routes as in Netherlands and Belgium
many thanks 🙏
My wife comes from there, it's lovely for road cycling. Aachen is really nice and a fair few long distance routes along disused railways and the like start or finish there. Monschau is incredibly scenic, or maybe Treves (Trier). Nideggen is very nice. A bit further away but more elevation you could try Pruem or Gerolstein (I don't know these two, wife's reccos)
The roads are fantastic compared to here, I can ride double the distance without fatigue from the crap surfaces over here. Loads of good cycle lanes and traffic free tarmac routes through farmland etc. Tons of cafes which seem to have more cyclists customers than anyone else.
No aggro from motorists either, cycle paths are very much optional. My wife's uncle leads cycle tour groups over there so he has taken me on some great routes. The whole area always strikes me as a cycling mecca that most people over here are unaware of. I love it!
We've passed through the area on tours. Dedicated cycle paths along rivers or quiet cycle routes through the hills. We use the radroutenplaner on the weserradweg-info.de site:
https://www.weserradweg-info.de/de/tourplanner/?cat=21896084
The more you zoom in the more routes appear.
Thanks for the info-really helpful
looking at the map linked above, thinking of trying Monschau
You mean Montjoie. 😉 You won't be far from the return leg of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège route, a great ride with a history.
