Q. Lost my EHIC card and going to the Canaries on Sunday, been cycling dozens of time abroad and always carried a EHIC card all the time but (luckily) never fell off, anyone needed to use one/ do they have any benefit/are they asked for/has Brexit nullified them/ are they meaningless?

You do have actual holiday insurance cover don’t you? If so, meh to the EHIC

Very insistant on seeing it in Spain( well Catalunya) but I think you can get the number online somewhere and they’ll accept that instead of the actual card.

If you use private insurance you’ll have to pay upfront and lose the excess.

Check the small print over the excess when not having used an EHIC

Pretty sure their site says the card number will be enough.

No use now, but for the future it’s worth having a scan of it stored in the cloud so you can access it from your phone. Saves carrying it around everywhere.

We lost ours, I tang then and they sent some replacements immediately. Then we found our old ones! So. Ow have two sets with different numbers and not sure which ones are valid so just carry them all.

You can renew online and number is enough. Done this when I first realised they ran out.

I used mine on Thursday in Leogang, as you walk into A&E they have signs asking for it and a sheet explaining that without it, the minimum bill is around €200 Euros. Can't wait to take back control and throw my cash at them.

Had to show it France although I don’t know what would have happened if I did not have it. Have to pay something (10-20% ?) anyway so perhaps they just ask for the full amount. My wife is French and she always has to show her medical card and generally pay something on top. As above you have travel insurance yes ? Without stressing you out it would be worth checking the travel insurance as mine insists I am registered wrh a uk gp and have an ehic

We are still in the EU so nothing has changed wrt ehic

Top tip for next time is to take a phone picture of it.

Continued support for the ehic system is pretty much agreed already between Davies and Barnier

Do you want to borrow mine, I'm not going anywhere for a while?

If you leave yours at home and the hospital wants to see it, you can phone up the EHIC helpline and ask for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) to be sent directly to the hospital. It's a bit of a faff though, especially if you're dealing with a language barrier.

You can also claim back the cost of treatment later in some cases, but it involves a big form and a 6-9 month wait.

Attempted to break my wrist earlier this year in Italy and needed some x-rays. Will be making sure my EHIC card gets packed next time.

Passports + EHIC in ziplock (IKEA euro branded) bag. That way I can't have one without the other.

I ended up in hospital in Sweden in July, didn't have my card, called dwp who faxed them a replacement certificate which they refused to acknowledge.

A couple of weeks later I had a £400 bill in the post just for them looking at my leg for 2 minutes.

Bank account travel insurance to the rescue, no excess - as far as they were concerned the replacement certificate was valid so covered me
