[Closed] Egg thrown at neighbour's car - police involved - WTF?

At some point on Tuesday, somebody smashed an egg on the driver's window of a neighbour's car.

That evening, a PCSO pushed a note through our door asking if our CCTV system has picked up "the incident suffered by a neighbour over the road"

Last night, two PCSOs knocked on the door. I was serving dinner so ignored them. They then spent 15 mins talking to the "victim."
I've since sent an email to tell them I have no evidence. Yeah - like I'm going to trawl through hours of CCTV footage to catch the phantom egg thrower.

A couple of months ago, someone threw a McD's milkshake over Mrs. S's car. Do you know what we did? We cleaned it off. We didn't call the bloody police about it.

So what's going on here. I thought GMP would have told them it's not a police matter.

Or am I missing something?

Is it a crime. Is it anti-social behaviour?

I think it's bloody ridiculous but I'm 48. The car owner (BMW One in white) is a 25 yr old snowflake type.

Well you've taken the time to moan about it on here.....

The car owner (BMW One in white) is a 25 yr old snowflake type.

Not sure what this is insinuating? Something about his politics and not liking Trump or racism? Or OP thinks he is just a bit of a 'nancy'?

PS. I would just have cleaned it off. Amazing he thought the police would be interested. Even more amazed they followed it up. Could there be more to it you don't know about?

I think they were quite right to complain, it's no yolking matter 😆

People have a right to live without fear of such behaviour – I doubt I would call the police if it was an isolated incident, but as you have also been the victim of a similar event, it is quite possible it has happened to them several times already and they are now escalating it.

That was nice of you

Instead of coming on an internet forum, why did choose to act politely and nicely and engage them?

Hmmm,

On one hand, I'd be boiling if it happened to my car and would hope that the police scrambled a crack squad to investigate

On thge other, sounds like the neighbour expects to be molly coddled by the state, and they may be poaching resources from more desrving causes

Yeah - like I'm going to trawl through hours of CCTV footage to catch the phantom egg thrower.

Why not, it wouldn't take that much time surely and would be the right thing to do.

Surprised at a lot of things on this thread - that the car owner called the police, that the police turned up, that you couldn't be bothered answering the door.

As above maybe it's not an isolated incident and the persecution has turned the neighbour into a shell of his former self.

Their is always a thing on social media to watch out for eggs being thrown at your car windscreen as means of car jacking, forcing you pull over to clear the windscreen as the raw egg just spreads with water and wipers.
No idea if it's true as it's never happened to me, only what I've read. Possible the OP's neighbour has seen the same thing.

Maybe this is a small part of a wider campaign against the person who owns the car? Maybe all sorts of things are happening to him that you don't know about, because you're ignorant and don't consider the big picture, and that the police do know about? Think carefully about how likely it is that the police would be interested in someone just dumping an egg on a car.

But a white BMW 1 series? Surely car jackers have more taste than that...

Typical nanny state, soufflé soufflé approach.

Damn I can't do puns on my own thread!

Seriously though - why should I open the door to PCSOs? It's nothing to do with me. I'd spent half an our making a (hot) meal for me and Mrs. S to sit down and enjoy after a day at work.

And it was your generations lacklustre attitude that got us to the point when low-level vandalism was considered normal - that's why all the films of the 80s that featured 'the future' always assumed it would be some wasteland inhabited with gangs of roaming bikers.

Some yoofs egged my door. In the process of legging it one broke his ankle. I went out and battered him to death.
Of course I didn't, I rang an ambulance, got some blankets and made sure he was comfortable. Rang his mum and listened to his mumbled apology.
People are dicks sometimes. Smile and get over it.

This isn't a troll by the way.

If the window had been smashed or the car keyed then I could understand. But a chuffing egg? Come on.

My MIL recently mentioned to a PCSO that some blatent drug dealing was taking place on her street.

"Well as long as they're not upsetting anybody there's nothing we can do" was his response. Again GMP.

why wait until something gets broke, why not stop it before further damage is done, you never know next time they might throw things at house windows and if it's yours it'll spoil your food more than answering the door to the police

Yet 3 weeks ago when somebody vandalized Chipps' car only two miles away GMP couldn't give a shit. Despite us knowing exactly who he was and where he lived because the idiot in question wrote a letter to the pub landlord complaining about being thrown out immediately prior to attacking the car and its occupants.

If the window had been smashed or the car keyed then I could understand. But a chuffing egg? Come on.
eggs are usually purchased in multiples of six. What if "he" did 6 cars on one street? or does the same car every night of the week? at what point does "its just a silly prank, wash it off" become "its got a bit ridiculous now, someone needs to have a word". A PCSO seems like the perfect person to investigate and possibly have that word before its become silly, or someone gets hurt. In fact is that not exactly what they were created for to let "real police" get on with "real policing"?

It may well be the complainer suspects a specific individual is responsible (an ex partner, for example) which suddenly changes the nature of the offence. If it was me, I'd have asked my neighbour first of all, but then I have a fairly constructive relationship with my neighbours and AFAIK they don't call me snowflake.

My MIL recently mentioned to a PCSO that some blatent drug dealing was taking place on her street.

"Well as long as they're not upsetting anybody there's nothing we can do" was his response. Again GMP.

Ah, so your hearsay evidence of not responding to something more serious is the reason they shouldn't pop over to ask for a look at the CCTV to see if its a kid, or something more sinister? Have you considered that the PCSO did indeed feed the drug dealing into the intelligence database? Did you consider that the correct response from your MIL would have been "it IS upsetting ME". Bear in mind that the objective of most drugs operations is to aim for as high up the chain as possible, not to lock up the guy who is supplying to get out of the debt his own dealer is threatening to kill him for.

I had a car that for some reason upset some one as it had multiple egg strikes and large amounts of both coke and milk poured over the windscreen. (Also a BMW)

Did not occur to me to call the police.

Never found out who done it or why.

If the window had been smashed or the car keyed then I could understand. But a chuffing egg? Come on.

Ah yes, it's only an egging

...like the other 18 times he/car/house has been egged

it's only a silent phone call

...like the other 22 he gets each day

it's only a bit of junk mail

...like the other dozen parcels he's had to collect from the PO

etc. + many other forms of intimidation. stalking, bullying and general harrassment that numerous people have to put up with because no one will do anything about these 'minor' offences.

Not saying that's exactly what's going on but try engaging your brain OP, there could be many reasons why the Police are involved.

On the other hand it might just be a couple of local kids, but so what, a chat with the PCSOs might stop it getting worse or spreading, was going to say if you have any interest in your local community you might be bothered about that kind of thing, but you're not coming across as the community type...

I'd have helped them out and would have hoped neighbours would have if I was the 'victim'. If it a great use of police time, not in the context given no but I imagine it was a fairly slow day for them and ideal fodder for PCSOs to pick up to gain some experience.

Sure if I was just sitting down for a meal I'd have said it wasn't a convenient time and to call back later (or if you already new by then they needed CCTV checked then to say you'd take a look and ask them for a contact number to call them on).

As for the egging itself, I'm guessing it was either just a random act of 'being a ****' and maybe a PCSO having a word (if they were ever identified) might stop them being such a **** in future or it was targeted and maybe more is to follow or the neighbour is already having other crap happen to them/being harassed. Either way it shouldn't be consider harmless & acceptable behaviour, it's up to the police whether it's worth dealing with if they're called (which was hopefully not via 999...).

polly sort of summed up my view, but it occurs to me that low level vandalism is exactly the sort of thing minor weed dealers do to intimidate neighbourhoods and retaliate against perceived snitches. May be if you dropped your isolationist self centred view and helped the plod then your concerns about dealers may also be addressed.
