Anyone looked into it? Recently come across the concept, and finding it fascinating. All about making sure that good intentions result in good outcomes.

Good introduction video:

If you have a little more time - good debate:

I'm trying to make some decisions on where I want my career to head, and this has really made me re-think what I previously thought on how best to use my time/efforts.

No real point to this thread - just found this all really interesting/thought provoking and wanted to share 🙂

Very thought provoking and a lot of counter-intuitive facts to ponder on. One initial reaction that I did have is that there seems to be an element of "holier than thou" elitism going on whereby one almost feels uncharitable if you are not donating all your organs and 75% of your income to effective charities!

I must admit I've never been very charitably inclined because all the major ones that you encounter seem to be huge bureaucracies and very little goes to the actual sufferers. I think the GiveWell website actually seems to reflect this fact but is a good place to start.

I will definitely look further into this, possibly buying William MacAskill's book as a first step. Thanks for posting Duane.

Yep, found the counter-intuitive elements really interesting. When you say about the holier than thou mentality - is that in general from people who donate, or from the above videos?

I've just downloaded his book, only just begun but good so far!

One of the chapters in his book is about why "follow your dreams" is bad advice - another counter-intuitive point which I've been thinking lots about!
