Wow, this thread caught fire while I was in the garden...

Invasion is a powerful word, it creates a sense of impending danger, its great for making a strong sounding argument. But calling net migration an invasion is like saying I invaded Sainsburys yesterday and pillaged their food (before politely queuing and paying for it, while collecting my nectar points). Get a grip.

And people waving the flag of St George, complaining about the intolerance overbearing religions inflicting their will of others need to go back to their history teachers and ask for the parent's money back. You want to make a point write to your MP, vote. Smashing shit up and getting in fights with police adds to my taxes, without the benefit of giving someone in need a home in process.

Stag Lane school in North London was the name of the school. Perhaps you might like to report them to the Police or Ofsted. I am not sure they have done anything wrong though. I was just making the point that

Before anyone misinterprets what I write I am not a racist and tolerate all colour, religion etc. I even know a few French people I like and I am happy for anyone of any race or religion to come here as long as they are pleasant. Admittedly the EDL are morons, actually one of my acquaintances is an active member, seems like a nice guy until we get on certain subjects then turns batshit mental.

What are the current immigration laws in the UK. I understand people from within the EU have a right to come and work here but as I understand it other nationals fleeing hardship or oppression should seek refuge in the first safe country they enter. In many cases that would be other European countries.

For example the people coming in wagons from France, should they not seek refuge in France.

Regarding jobs, isn't it that jobs should be filled by people from this country unless that is not possible. Obviously that includes the EU.

Asking initially as I do have quite simplistic views on many things but I am also open minded. However I do think immigration should be more tightly controlled and applied as we are forever hearing stories about "illegal" immigrants which we are led to believe is about 1 million, depending on whose figures you choose to believe. I would love to understand what or how these "illegal" immigrants exist or what indeed makes an illegal immigrant.

Nah, not really ninfan. Never been an issue for me. With regard to my kids, as long as they're healthy, happy and loved, the rest is immaterial.

I think the clue is in the word 'stories'. I'm not denying there are illegal immigrants, but I'd bet my house on the fact that the numbers of them are wildly exaggerated by the media, and mouthpieces on the right whose rather transparent strategy is to use the politics of hate and division to shift the balance of politics rightwards, to ensure either a tory government or a labour govt with tory policies. It would seem they've been very successful.

Thanks dazh I can understand that! Genuinely appreciate that. Sometimes you believe stuff other times you don't and as I said depending on whose figures you read. I think officially its like 250k which is still a lot but then you see higher but never lower figures and if it plays into peoples agendas.

I used the example of the school to make a point.
In a democratic country, or school. The majority can vote to make changes. They can cancel the Christmas carol concert or they can vote for more important changes. Changes that might affect your life.
I would hope that if Muslims, become a majority, they will be as tolerant of you and your ideas as you are of them, but I wouldn't bet on it. It is certainly not the case in any other Muslim country.

I'm still pretty convinced a fair few of these Asians that keep getting referred to were born and bred in this country this making them very much British.

Also there seems to be (as is often the case) a blurring of distinction between immigrants with a legal right to remain in this country, illegal immigrants who are here but are being a bit naughty and should really be back home wherever that may be and asylum seekers who have come to this country as they are pretty scared of being shot, raped, beheaded and otherwise horribly persecuted in their own country.

As a developed nation of reasonable means (come on, Britain is not really badly off by world standards) I have no problems with people wanting to move here under such circumstances.

While it may be true that we have not managed immigration into the UK very successfully in the past, those that take this as a reason to argue, "no more immigration" should be careful what they wish for.

As was the case in Germany before, our demographics will ultimately require us to increase levels of immigration otherwise our fiscal nightmare will be even worse. [u]Bottom line, the UK needs more immigrants not less if it is going to cope economically.[/u]

The case was made quite clearly this week by the OBR in their latest Fiscal Sustainability Report, not that I would expect this to be bedtime reading for most of the EDL's membership!

Nope. Total immigration was around 500000 last year, a figure which despite what you may think is falling (and not because it's the tories in power incidentally; it's been gently falling for years- there was a headline grabbing drop this year but it's not going to be sustained as it was mostly students, in a few years time there'll be a corresponding drop in emigration.)

People get very confused on this because they see stats for total immigration, and forget to deduct total emigration. Most people that come to the UK don't stay forever. For example, students, who are the single biggest immigrant group, make up 2/5ths of all immigrants and whose visas are specifically for study- the majority leave after their studies, having paid sackfulls of cash to the UK universities.

So once you deduct the 350000 people who left, you have net immigration of around 150000. Obviously this doesn't give you your "millions" in the last few years, even if you say it twice.

I never cease to be utterly disgusted at the behavior of these cretins. So dejected by the sight of that boy surrounded by such hate. Truly a glimpse into the dark side.

On reflection maybe the EDL are right to be concerned.

Hopefully they will soon be expelling descendants of illegal immigrants from their ranks.

If they start with the Angles, then the Saxons, and finish up by culling out those of Norman descent they will be doing their country a great service.

Then both remaining members of the EDL can go forward secure in their racial purity. 🙂

I hope you're not suggesting the working classes are inherently racist. Excuse the sweeping generalisation, but If the working classes are guilty of anything, it's being uneducated and ignorant. This ignorance allows the likes of the EDL, UKIP, rightwing media, the racist gobshite down the pub, to peddle lies and scare stories which provide simplistic and sensationalist explanations for the problems experienced by the working classes. And in the absence of any clear opposition from the likes of the Labour party, is it any wonder this is happening?

I agree with your latter points but if I can elaborate I do think that much of the working classes feel disenfranchised through lack of work and their changing neighbourhoods.....unfortunately resistance and fear of change is natural in human beings.....in this regard I do feel as if we should be trying to listen to their grievances instead of making the problem worse by sweeping social problems under the carpet.

Personally I just feel sorry for humanity as a whole and can usually see the world from anyone's perspective...instead of dismissing one group as stupid/racists/terrorists...so thats why I weighed in.
