Been told that the stag do fancy dress theme is highland/brave heart. I can't help but think that this is slightly risky for an English group.

Can the stw collective provide ideas for me to meet the theme, and how to do this at short notice as I'm short on ideas.

Paint your face blue. Cheap & easy to remove in case of difficulty

I would skip the stag do as it's sounds like it's asking for trouble.

You'll be fine, plenty other dafties get dressed up like Mel and walk around town for a few drinks!

However, you could play it safe and just dress as a peasant from those times as there were plenty of them in the film as well.

Or dress as a sheep and represent the highland clearances...which weren't at the time of Mel, but were relevant to the Highlands.

Plenty other daft things to get dressed as that will humour/annoy people...

Have a great weekend!

You won’t have any trouble in Edinburgh. The city is used to tourists & in any case has loads of English people living here. Me included.

Unlikely to get any trouble in Edinburgh unless you really behave like idiots and go to the wrong places however its a daft Idea IMO

Just get a "see you jimmy" hat from a tartan tat shop

Doesn't seem like a particularly risky idea.
But future stag will almost certainly cringe (and not in a good way) at the complete lack of imagination displayed on deciding the theme.

Braveheart is easy; assistant hair stylist (uncredited) or Second Unit Director would both be easily achievable .

For highlands maybe absentee landowner?

Don't worry - no self respecting Scotsman is paying £6 a pint to drink in the grassmarket anyway!

Yeah, sounds like no fun at all to me

Why do people do this?

Genuinely interested in some clear rationale

I'd be more worried about having to spend an evening with someone who dreamed up ( not that it took much thought, clearly) such an utterly, barrelscrapinglybad naff theme.

It's not likely to cause any hassle. Most people will just ignore you but the longer the night goes on..the more drink...the less self control on all sides.

"Pink Stetson and pink cowboy boots and tag along with a hen party instead."

This would very much be my choice👍 not a big fan of stags, only go on them to avoid being seen as boring (which I am 😂)

The outfits won't be your problem - getting in to a pub will.  Nowhere in central Edinburgh you would want to drink will let you in if they have a bouncer, or serve you if you make it to the bar. I know this because I worked in a few back in the day and this No Stag or Hen Dos policy hasn't changed.

I hear there are some nice places down in Granton.

If the pub has a flat roof they'll be fine.

😱Times must have changed. I'm from Edinburgh and would never drink on Granton.

I took my (English) wife to a pub on Leith walk and was not impressed when she put her worst Scots accent on and kept yelling "one more tune" at a band. If she tried that in my 20's she would have had her head in her hands to play with 😕

Those Blackpool pictures are amazing and horrifying at the same time.

Not been to Edinburgh for a long time, but when I lived there I remember lots of places not allowing Stag or Hen parties in. So yeah good luck on that front. Otherwise no one will give a stuff about a bunch of pissed up sassenachs pretending to be Braveheart.

Last time I was there, the highlight was a bunch of rugby lads on tour in Princes Street Gardens tacking shots at 10AM and one of them chucking up 😂

Most are sassenachs in Edinburgh. The term refers to "lowland" Scots as well as English.

  1. Definitely do not go down Granton, that's a joke I believe...  The only pub is the Anchor.  I stayed in Pilton, I would not have dreamed of having a pint there.  Plus, since the shooting the atmosphere may be a bit dull...

However, my original comment was to say that you will probably get a great response.  As long as your just having a laugh and don't rise to any bait, you should have a great (but expensive time).  Some one should definitely dress as the king tho.

A great idea would be to have a Wallace in a bag.  He a fake arm, leg and foot, have it hanging out a bag, spraff it up and pretend it's Wallace...

@Tjagain Looked in three Gaelic dictionaries all say that Sasanach means Englishman. Incidentally I got the spelling wrong in my earlier post. When I started learning gaelic the meaning was as someone said above anyone from south of the Highland line but it changed maybe 20 years ago.
You can check the meaning here on Stor data an online gaelic dictionary

I did a stag do in Edinburgh, with a load of blokes from the Peak District, we were mostly mid to late forties, anyone on here remember that. I and a few others bailed out at midnight, but the hard core that carried on were asked to a party by some young lasses who gave them an address, when they arrived at the address it was a "Help the Aged" shop. You've got to hand it to them that damned funny.
