Working at University of Edinburgh (not Napier) next week. Train strikes have scuppered my normal travelling arrangements. Not flying. Will drive from home which is about 5 - 6 hours. Looking at hotel prices in the city (and the price to park as well), wondering about staying a bit outside and getting a local train or something.

Not an area I know well at all. All other times I've just punted myself into Waverley and stayed at whatever purple palace/ibis/other generic hotel is cheapest.

Stayed at Dunbar and got the train in before, worked out ok. But will local (ScotRail) trains be running or will they be striking?

If you're there for a few days JustPark has some options that aren't completely eye watering. Used it about 3 months ago when staying for a week, parking near the city side of the Botanic Gardens.

Unfortunately the park and rides don't allow overnight parking.

Cheapest I could find in Edi was £200+ a night even for chains. Uni pays but it's a total rip off compared to out of season. And finding parking in the city isn't a lot of fun either. I really like the train journey, get load done, stress free normally, no changes. Kind of grumpy I'm going to have to play with the traffic esp coming home Thurs night 🙁

Does the tram go anywhere near where you are working? If so, Park and Ride at the Airport may be a 'cheap' way of getting in - assuming you are staying on the airport side of the sprawl...

Ah good point @jeffl - I'd best check that. JustPark was my next point of call if I couldn't find a way to stay out of the city.

Edinburgh uni is an hour away from Peebles by bus...bring your bike and enjoy your evenings in the valley?

The busses are nice, tables and everything and they take bikes if you want/need to top up your commute at the Edinburgh end

Bathgate is a nice little place (or it was last time I stayed there about 12 years ago!). 40 mins or so to Edinburgh on the train (I think they are running) and hotels considerably less than £200 a night. Very close to the M8 for your escape on Thursday

Where are you coming from?  Stay around Gala and get the train in?

Russell Road around Sauchiebank is free to park on and close to the city centre - walking distance.

If you're not paying, just stay in town and enjoy it. Edinburgh's lovely at this time of year - the glut of tourists for the festival haven't arrived yet, the roads are quieter because school holidays have started and it's warm at the moment. There's nothing in Dunbar and even less out west by the airport.

The Scholar is former uni accommodation turned into a nice hotel and is less than £200 a night. I just had a quick look and the Travelodge by Waverley is £131 a night - you could leave the car on a non-residential street a walk away (like Abbey Lane) for the week.

If you're not bringing a bike, then stay in a hotel in Melrose. Nice town a decent pub or two, some nice eating and easy to tweedbank which is an hour to Waverley, then short walk to UofE.

In fact a short, sub hour, walk from anywhere in Melrose to tweedbank so if there's post work beers it's easy. Also Tempest brewery taproom at tweedbank if the need arises.

eh? Nice compared to what, Mogadishu?

The hotels out at Edinburgh Park and/or  airport are a bit soulless but have parking and good connections into the city.

@tjagain - assume A73.

Scholar I've stayed at before. Forgot about that completely. Prob get Uni rates as well. They also have a big car park.

Be lovely to do some riding but I think they are going to be long days. Might get the better half to come along as could turn it into a mini hols (in the evenings anyway)

and this STWer would store your bike and take you for a ride except for the fact that I’m away next week.

I clearly have low standards! 😁

I thought it was fine, it was a long time ago though!

Although now I'm wondering if I might have mixed it up with a different project I was working on around the same time 🤔

You could try Newcraighall at the end of the City Bypass. It has a station straight into city. By Fort Kinnaird and not far from coast.

Scotrail services are running.  its only the cross border services that are affected in Scotland.

Bathgate is "fine" in the same way as my wife is "fine" when she's pissed off, rather than the way that wine or food is "fine"!  Its not somewhere that people go on holiday to - which may mean its cheaper.

If the OP is working at the Uni has he considered the Uni halls?  They rent them out over the summer as bnb accom.  Its not luxury (and knowing Ed uni wont be that cheap), but presume they have parking for residents.

Have you tried the accommodation at Pollack Halls? The John McIntyre conference centre there has a hotel attached which is pretty good and would be handy for the main university. I'm not sure you can usually book it direct, but you might be able to as you are working there.

https://www.uoecollection.com/conferences-events/venue-hubs/pollock-estate/john-mcintyre-conference-centre/

Or there's a Malmaison or Holiday Inn Express down on The Shore in Leith which you can use the tram for access. You could even ask TJ to show you the sights 🙂

I parked overnight at park and ride, I m sure I read on here it was ok.  Signs do say otherwise tho.  We parked for 3 days earlier this year, no problem at all.  The one south on the ring road, again, usually go on train but train strike made us drive.

Stayed at Pollock halls before. Looks like can get a Uni deal at KM apartments 10 mins walk from the building I'll be working in. Also has a subsidy for close-ish NCP 24 hour Car Park. Just think least hassle is stay in the city and walk to work.

Thanks for all advice tho, defo going to try and do something with the bike when I'm next back.

Premier Inn , Musselborough. Short drive to station then 2 stops to Waverley on the train. It’s about the cheapest we found.
