It's been a good while since I last summoned the power of the STW hive mind.

I'm planning on booking an overnight stay in Edinburgh with the girlfriend and would like some suggestions for hotels and restaurants please. I'm thinking 4/5 star hotel and similar quality restaurants...

Ta very much!

I stay at The George occasionally for work, 5 ins walk from Waverley station, nice interior (particularly now the rooms have been refurbished).

Are you hoping to come up in August? If so, good luck with that.

Yeah, not much free space in August and what there is will be overly expensive. If you want to stay a bit further out then I stopped at the Norton House Hotel and Spa a couple of weeks back for work and that was nice.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I'm looking at Mid-September... Apparently there's something going on this month. Pfft!

Gardeners Cottage if you're after something a bit different. 7 course set menu, but not a s****y place.

For posh:

Wisharts
Castle Terrace
Kitchin

All have Michelin stars

Mark Greenaway's is along similar lines to the above, no star but very good still.

The G&V Royal Mile Hotel (5*) and the Apex Waterloo Place Hotel (4*) are also worth a look.

Chaophraya is fantastic if you like Thai, or Fishers for seafood.

We usually stay in The Roxburgh on Charlotte Square, can usually get it for £100ish inc. breakfast for 2 - but wanted to stay this week and £350...

Aizle to eat, tower also good but you pay for the view (which is very nice though!). Gardener's Cottage is very good too and a bit more relaxed, different setting for a 'city' restaurant. Timberyard is on the tick list as I've heard good things.

If you like Thai food definitely try Nok's Kitchen in Stockbridge, not been open long and is excellent.

For a curry i had dinner at Mumbai Mansion the other week and it was utterly splendid and I am a picky curry snob.

We stayed there for a couple of nights in August 3 years ago on our way to Ullapool. Our hotel was the Glasshouse and for food we ate at The Dogs and The Scran and Scallie. The food in both places was great, the hotel was nice but we had an issue with our room which detracted from it a bit.

Timberyard for food and cocktails - excellent. We're trying out the Gardeners Cottage next, meant to be superb.
