Planning an afternoon in Edinburgh at the weekend before going to see pals there in the evening. Any recommendations for family dining around tea-time? Would consider anywhere reasonably central - probably going to be at the National Museum in the afternoon; friends live about halfway down Easter Road.

Quite far from MOS but the Korean Barbecue beside the kings theatre is great - and the weans can cook their own dinner on the table in front of them. Not Spicy. Unless you want it to be. Not very vegan. Better than Nandos, Weatherspoons type stuff.

La Favorite - on Leith Walk?

You're spoilt for choice, there's loads of great restaurants in the east end. Sticking close to Easter Road, Leith Walk is good for Italian restaurants like Vittoria, Valvona and Carolla or as already suggested La Favourite. On Broughton St there's The Educated Flea for curry, or Eden's Kitchen which has something for everyone and the one I want to go to right now. Damn, I'm hungry

Taste of Italy at the top of Leith Walk is also very good but can be busy at weekends. Olive tree on Broughton street is fairly family friendly as well. Although the educated flea is a fantastic restaurant I wouldn't recommend it for children. It's very small, tends to be very slow service and, depending on age / fussiness, doesn't have a tremendously child friendly menu. Also, you will definitely need to book a fair way in advance to get a Saturday table.

Do the kids like Harry Potter?

The Elephant House cafe is next to the museum.

The restaurant everyone is being (mis)spellchecked on is La Favorita on Leith Walk.

I'd say look for something either on George IV bridge as that's near the museum or down Leith Walk as that's near Easter Road

I was going to suggest Vittoria on the bridge as its just round the corner from the museum. We have been for family meals a few times.

IIRC, its in the same little chain as La Favorita too.

Most Italians in Edinburgh (well everywhere in fact) are very family friendly. If they like Middle Eastern type food, Pomegranate on Leith Walk is very good. Only thing to be aware of around Leith Walk is that restaurants can get very busy in the pre-theatre time if there's something on at the Playhouse.

I agree George IV bridge or north / south bridge is easiest.

I can second Victoria on George the IV bridge and also suggest Cafe Andaluz on the George IV bridge. Tapas bar that has a great range and friendly staff. The one here is less crammed in too than the George st one!

Mother india if indian is a goer.

Dimsum? Stack just off leith walk.

I don't have kids but surely you just take them anywhere? Doesn't bother me if kids are running round in the slightest!

Our normal post museum dinner spot is Civerinos Slice on Forrest road, excellent pizza. It's hipster central but pretty friendly and always good with the kids

I would have suggested Vittoria's on George IV bridge as well, I actually just love the vibe in there, it's busy but they sort of make you feel included in the party somehow. Food is just decent Italian fare, guess it's sometimes tricky to find really stand-out Italian.

Las Iguanas on George St is a bit chainy, but we've never had a bad meal there, have taken the baby in with us, staff are pleasant and they're always playing some decent funky latin music which always goes down well. Always end up there if we're feeling unadventurous.
