Partner and myself were walking around the city and with visibility so good had a wee walk up Arthurs seat, cracking views all round, the snowy Perthshire and Angus hills, the bridges over the Forth, West towards Ben Ledi maybe Ben Lomond it was cloudy over that way, Fife, North Berwick Law and the Bass Rock, The Lammermuirs  The Pentlands and then the city its self.

Is there another city in the uk with as many views?

It was mobbed but 90% foreign accents, do any locals ever walk up it?

No. They're all up Calton Hill.

If you're talking view of distant mountains then no, cos there aren't any with a really big hill in the middle.

I've never been up it on a clear day but apparantly you can see the top of Ben Macdui from the top of Dundee Law.

You can definitely see Jura from the Pentlands (Still within the City boundary). I can't see I've seen it from Arthur's Seat though. The Cairngorms are easy to spot from there too.

Its not just Arthurs seat - its all the elevation changes around the city combined with some fine old buildings give rise to the views.  Walking round the city centre suddenly a view will open up to the sea and fife beyond, then a glimpse down a close to some ancient buildings , from the north you get the fine skyline of the city centre etc etc.  It is a particularly beautiful city and IMO one of the most beautiful ever - and I have been to almost all european capitals and quite a few beyond europe

Had a nice wee walk with the girls yesterday around the Greenock cut - an old aqueduct that runs the length of the hills behind the (dismal) town, the views are incredible, some of the council houses at the top of whatever the scheme on the hill in Greenock is have quite a vista*.

*Sadly trumped by having to live in Greenock.

The Merrick must have the farthest views in all directions though, Snowdon (though I've never had it clear enough), Lakes, NI, IOM, and all the way to Arrochar Alps and beyond.

Yes, Edinburgh is a beautiful city. I've lived here since I came to uni at 17, from a wee village in Fife. Have only recently thought about moving out of the city to get a bit more space/ a garden etc

It's a lovely city to look at. Was also there this weekend, staying on Leith waterfront. Also the only place I've come across where they've built speed humps on cobbled streets. 🙂

Yeah, I used to live in Parkside Terrace at the foot of Arthur's Seat and we walked up it fairly often when the weather was good. It was always amusing to see the tourists (usually Americans) kitted out in full outdoor gear like they were tackling Nevis in the dead of winter, as the locals pottered about in jeans and trainers. 😀

I agree with TJ

Don't worry - he'll return in a minute to explain that you don't 😉

One thing I noticed whilst running last week is that (at least where I ran) the big town houses that are now offices or shops gave way quite quickly to residential town houses, even including some fairly small ones, but all in the same lovely style and wide streets.  To me, it makes the big city centre feel homely and the sort of place you could walk to.  In other cities there's a discontinuity between city centre and the nice areas to live - either it's hemmed in by roads or it's run down areas, and the nice suburbs are on the outskirts.

Of course those houses probably cost more than I'd ever be able to afford.

Even as a Soapdodgin Weedgie I'll admit Edinburgh is beautiful to look at, just don't look down as the streets are a mess, litter is shocking as are the state of the roads. Take out the people and it would be fine. I've worked in the city centre for most of my life now and am constantly frustrated by the incompetence and borderline corruption of the City Council.

I used to do a walk up the radical road and around to the top most mornings - as they were building the parliament, so a few years back.

and don’t assume it’s not the locals with the foreign accents - not all Edinburghers have Home Counties drawls. 😀

Why did you have to go and say that?

It'll take us months to calm TJ down now.

Its not just borderline corruption - its overt.  I have seen copies of emails soliciting bribes.  The council are incompetent, corrupt and self serving and involved in a 20 year cover up of corruption over building repairs.  Beautiful city, the worst council I have ever heard of.  Makes T Dan Smith / Poulson look like amateurs

I genuinely and with some strength dislike the place.

Too busy for me, if I had any social skillz or cultural inclinations that might be different. It is admittedly, less ugly than any other U.K. city I’ve spent time in.

PP - they tried to get £130 000 out of me during this con.  a 15 year battle with them thats still not resolved.  Provable lies from senior officers.

I'll have that tea please - I am so angry.  15 years of my life spent fighting them

I've lived in a lot of cities now and Edinburgh is still one of my very favourite places which is one reason why I still keep a house there despite mostly living in London for the last few years. It's very, very rare for people to say they genuinely don't like the city - and when they do it's obvious that they're demented in some way or just plain jealous...  🙂

I will admit I've not been up Arthur's Seat for a good few years - mainly because I'm more likely to head up to the Pentlands and enjoy the view over the city from there. I have been up Calton Hill recently though.

I like the descent off the back through the gorse bushes..have to dismount at one point though! The one down to the St Margret's Loch carpark is mint too. View from TJ's flat is also pretty cool it must be said!
