Need to build as play area for the girls as we now have a swing-set to go with the trampoline & slide so..
Going to mark the area out, remove the turf so that I can level the area out. I then want to put bark down. I'm going to need to edge a couple of places (about 10m across the existing lawn) to retain the bark. There's a wall at one end & fence on the other).
Initially I was thinking of sleepers but by god they're expensive. Is there a cheaper option? Decking boards maybe?

If it's just edging to retain the bark then 22x100mm or 22x150mm set on edge into a small channel in the ground (or using pegs too if necessary). That way you haven't got a big slippery-when-wet surface to step on.

Is the top of the bark surface going to be level with the lawn?

If you're trying to create a soft landing area in case of falls from height then you don't really want edging boards sticking proud of the surface which is likely to be hard and add new trip hazards in.

You will probably want the bark to be deeper than the depth of the turf too for it to have any impact reducing properties.

British Standards EN1176 and EN1177 are a good reference here - might be able to find info on the RoSPA site too.

You also don't want bark, it is not very nice to walk on barefoot and cats like to shit in it. There is a rubber chipping alternative or matting which might be worth looking at?

Dog shite, broken bottles and empty cans. Give it that authentic feel.

I read “in” in the thread title, it wasn’t the thread I thought it was going to be
