What do we think has actually happened to cause the scenario shown in the beginning of the movie? The economy was able to produce huge amounts of stuff, which must've been paid for, but he is shown driving over discarded bank notes outside the bank which suggests either hyperinflation and a bank run or a sudden crash of production meant there was nothing to buy. Then again, it is the B&L bank and they have a monopoly on everything... So you'd think inflation could be controlled.

They all moved onto spaceships where there was no use for cash therefore the physical notes became pointless. Moved to a cashless society, just need a card or chip for payment.

Never entered my mind, it's an animation with robots using anti-grav, so likely not in any future that'll affect me.

It won't affect you of course, but I thought it an interesting academic discussion.

The global economy is still big enough to build huge spaceship though.. Hmm..

Earth has become uninhabitable for hundreds of years due to BnL. The corporation took over the world/governments starting in the 1950's. Wall-E is the only machine left on Earth after it ran out of resources. He survived because he is fascinated with human culture and also his friendship with a cockroach, which helped maintain his personality and fulfillment. Robots/machines on Axiom (having left earth centuries earlier) show that machines develop a sense of purpose out of the humans' dependence on them. Wall-E is a robot Jesus, and He and his love, the appropriately named Eve, save the human race and start a new beginning on Earth again.

During the credits of Wall-E we see the shoe that contains the last of plant life. It grows into a mighty tree.

count zero is either really really old or lacks ambition/imagination. (maybe he thought cordless telephones where the peak of technology 20 yrs ago?)... 😉 x
i read this and thought it might be worth exploring

since sci-fi often links interesting thought experiments, maybe they were basing their anti-utopic future on a broken version of this

The planet was rendered uninhabitable by pollution so everyone evacuated to orbiting ships where, as stated above, everything became automated, so the cash in their pockets became worthless. I assume there must still have been a "reserve" underpinning everything, but essentially there was no use for cash in the pocket.

I assume they went this way is it is easier to control populations if you can automate their spending habits.

why does it have to be an either/or 😆

Anyway - according to the documentary 'Back the the Future'-
"roads Marty? Where we're going we won't need roads"
- and they were heading for 2015. So anti-grav is probably only a few hours away - that will put paid to all the wheel size bickering. So unless CZ really is Methuselah then he needs to get with the programme!

Lets also keep in mind that the sexy robots that will want to kick us all to death in Bladerunner will get built next year too, ready to get all angsty and die in 2019. Although I think instead of getting all poetic about sea beams and the Tanhauser Gate while they're smashing your guts in, they're more likely to just repeat 'Unexpected item in bagging area, Unexpected item in bagging area, Unexpected item in bagging area, Unexpected item in bagging area'

We don't have to, no.. but Wall-E is clearly loaded with important points. The question however is whether or not that's a realistic extrapolation of economic activity or not.

I guess THM's getting pissed up with his City colleagues, which is why he's not joining in 🙂
