Ebike zapped by radar (maybe)

Well out Fatbiking in Bayerisch Wald close to the Czech Border last weekend. Went up a peak called Groser Arber which has two radar towers for the Luftwaffe on the top. http://www.ace-high-journal.eu/bodenmais,-luftraumueberwachung--groszer-arber-.html There were about 20 folk on a range of e-Fatbikes mostly with Shimano and Bosch motors but only two of us with Fantic and Brose S motors and identical batteries and controllers.

Just near the top is a sign saying pacemaker wearers shouldn't go further, fair enough but another 30 metres height to the obligatory cross on the summit.

I'm pedalling with my mate on an identical bike and as we top out, both lose power simultaneously. Control shows batteries have charge, can be switched on and off. Mandatory plug in - plug out, plug in makes no difference. Shimano and Bosch kit unaffected but us two lost power.

Drop 100m of height and its all back to normal again..... The only thing we can assume is the radar transmission zapped our bikes somehow.

Can this be possible?

Certainly possible I would think.

(The radar only likes muscle bikes possibly?😉)

That's mental!

I'm sure some STW armchair engineers/scientists will be along shortly to give their expert opinion.

It 100% can interfere with electronics. Radars produce electromagnetic radiation which interferes with the passage of electrons in a circuit The rumor is that the AEGIS radar system can completely destroy the electronics of older, non shielded aircraft if they focus all energy downrange using the target acquisition system. Not sure I believe this as I'd assume that it would recover once the signal is removed, but I genuinely don't know.

X-Band and Ku Band are in the microwave range, so will also boil water very efficiently if you're close enough. A visit to Fylingdales showed the number of dead birds which had landed in front of the solid state emitters and had been coocked/zapped

I would take a guess at EM interference on the sensors so the motors shut down being unable to tell what state the bike was in!

poor shielding on the control electronics and entirely feasible. although the levels you saw maybe out of design spec.

I had an golf gti with an aftermarket alarm system. When the emergency services changed to a new comms frequency (Tetra?) I had to be really careful about where I parked it as I couldn't start it if I was too close to a tower. Had to push it a couple of hundred yards down the road in southampton once when I inadvertently parked under a transmitter tower.

It can't. It doesn't produce enough power and the antennas do not have enough gain.

About 20 years ago on a motorbike trip out to Whitby. On the way back we were about to ride into a massive storm on the road back to Pickering just before Fylingdales. We pulled up and donned the waterproofs and then upon getting back on, my mates bike would not release the alarm/immobiliser, even with the fob directly above the alarm main unit. It would not accept or could not accept the signal. He had to get recovered. Apparently once passed Fylingdales the alarm started working again.
I'm not sure what would cause you loss of power but there was certainly interference from the radar station.

Can't remember where I saw it but there was a sign on a road leading up to a transmitter that said something like 'no vehicles beyond this point' as the EMF was strong enough to bork some car electronics so you couldn't drive back down without switching the transmitter off!

High power radars can overwhelm decent electronics

RAF Fylingdales, on the North York Moors will jam car ignition / alarm systems. If you switch off your engine near the site, you end up needing to be towed away before it will work again.

About 2 minutes from home on my road ride route I go past a green box on the edge of a farmers field that about the size of a garden shed, whatever’s in there plays havoc with my heart rate strap or head unit. Loses connection and takes ages to pair again. If I leave the head unit off till I’m past it everything works as normal. This only started happening when covid started, which also happens to be when I moved there and started riding past it…

Easy to tell, if you have a 10 min loss of memory and find the saddles really uncomfortable 🙂

That just means my IBS has played up again and my mind has automatically refused to record the memory of the resulting cleanup.
