So, I’ve had an item sell on eBay, a buy it now sale.  No payment received, and a quick check of seller shows no feedback at all, despite it appearing they have 20 transactions under their belt. Sent them a message, but no response....

That’s why I suspect this is some sort of scamming attempt. But exactly what? Not going to post it without payment.

Is it possible to keep the sale live while payment is awaited?

They pay, you send, they raise dispute, get refund, you don't get item back.

Maybe they are also the 2nd placed bidder and this way they get it cheaper when you offer it to their second account?

There should be an option to cancel the sale somewhere, have a dig - you'll probably need ebay on a browser rather than one of their shitty apps.

Next time, I'd recommend using the buyer restriction options - you can stop people with no feedback from buying from you (again, a lot easier on a pc)

Ah, a response, they want me to send to Finland...

”If you send to Finland I will pay”

yes, alright then, ... off to the Post Office...

That's the wrong way round. You pay, and I'll send to Finland. Also, isn't there an e-bay delivery service now, where you send it to a UK address and they forward it on? Might be worth checking out for a bit more scam security.

Is it a gift for the buyer's son?

Best thing I ever did on eBay was turning on the minimum feedback thing for bidding.  Just wish there was something similar on here for the Classifieds.

Oh aye, I should've picked up on that. If only there were little pictures that could be deployed to make our written intentions clear. 🤔 🤣

i think people sometimes do it to remove a similar item to something they are selling.

there is an option to cancel a buy it now transaction and relist it straight away

All the extra options for sellers (minimum feedback, restricted countries etc) are part of the advanced selling tool.

Which is a right faff to use TBH.

Doesn't sound like a scam, just sounds like a buyer who isn't going to pay.  Open a case as soon as you can (something like 3 days I think) wait a week for them to bay then get your fees back and relist.

I have had to do that many times which is why everything I sell now is Buy it Now with immediate payment required.  I may get a bit less money than at auction but it is far less hassle.

Find out how much it is to post to Finland first, and give them the extra price for the postage. IF they pay it then send it. I'd also make sure that it can be tracked and signed for if you think they are in anyway dodgy. Also make sure it goes to the address on their account and nowhere else!

Actually here in spain all sellers seem to offer some sort of cash on delivery.  I have never done it but you can pay when you sign, I assume that if you don't like it, you just return it with the courier who has just delivered it, and pay nothing.

Maybe Finland offer the same, I cannot remember the name of the service though.
