My first return requested on Ebay. Selling one of my Dad's old fishing reels.

Description 'One of my dad's old reels. Has to be at least 20, probably 30 years old. Well used with wear on the rounded edges. A few spots of corrosion and scratches on the handle.'

Get the message back saying 'severe corrosion, end plate damaged, unusable'. Listed with clear photos of all corrosion. It was working when I sent it.

Contest? Or suck it up as my first bad ebay selling experience?

Not much you can do. Ask them to return it and you'll refund when received.

I've contested a few and always won (and not contested the legit ones, obvs). But its a pain in the arse, it probably makes more sense to accept the return.

Yeh. I felt I'd been honest about the description. The damage wasn't there when I sent it so either it got damaged in the post or...

I've sent him a nice message saying sorry, return it and I'll sort out the refund when it arrives.

Assume I'll take a hit on Ebay fees and return postage for this one?

Presumably the photos show the plate that is now allegedly damaged to be all fine and dandy?

You'll get the ebay fees back.
Dispute the case if necessary but refund the winning bid amount.

I think I've identified the 'end plate damage' in the photos. 'Tis a small ding.

I think I'll just take this one on the chin and chalk it up to the 'selling my Dad's old stuff on that I know eff all about on Fleabay' experience.

Just so I'm clear. I'll have to refund the full bid, plus the return postage, but won't get Ebay fee charged?

The damage wasn't there when I sent it so either it got damaged in the post or...

... or you're about to get (parts of?) a different reel back.

Check about the return postage - last time I had to do a return the postage was down to the buyer (they've probably changed that now though ). Pain in the backside to sell anything on ebay now.

That or settle for a part-refund.

TBH the times when I've had cases raised (only a couple I can recall) they've been selling my daughter's mobile phones, where description of scuffs and scratches is in the eye of the beholder.

One person emailed me and because I hadn't responded within 10 minutes went nuclear. To me it was scraped and scratched in accord with a 2 year old phone that a teenager had owned. To her it was massively scrape, scratched beyond belief.

I issued a part-refund to get shot of the thing and in future sell things like that for spares/repairs (which often attract bargain hunters anyway)...

Yup. Got me by the short and curlies I say.

I reckon you've hit the nail on the head here. I've sold 5 reels previously in similar condition no complaint. I felt I was honest about the condition but to him it's unusable.

I'm not going to do a part refund. He can send it back and I'll list it again as spares or repair.

just dealt with my first refund as well.. buyer said the 12 photos didnt properly represent the item ( a part from a 60 year old car that was listed as use with 60 years of scratches dents ect from use, viewing pre bidding is highly reccomended)

they wanted a 50% discount and when i said no wanted 20 quid to send it back ( it cost me 6 quid to get it to them..so as it was 50 miles away i said i d come and get it.. delayed for 10 days before they d let me come.. then said i couldnt come but a courier could.. so a courier who looked a lot like me picked it up..

proper pain in the backside.. just because they didnt want it. and bang unfair of ebay to automatically take the 150 quid immediately from my paypal account

So I'm away with work this week.

Return got delivered 1130 yesterday according to the tracking.

Get an Ebay message tonight.

hi you have had the reel returned for two days now, when are you going to issue me a full refund ?

Beginning to think I've got an a grade a tool here.

I've replied politely just saying I'm away, won't be able to inspect the item before Friday evening.

I assume my feedback for this transaction is as good as f****d regardless of me refunding him quickly or not. Anything to be gained by refunding him quickly uninspected? Or make him sweat? I don't have to refund until the 29th when he can open a case.

Make him sweat a little. Get him angry so his feedback is over the top, personal, and aggressive. Ebay will remove such feedback. Job done!

Does anyone actually GAS about feedback anymore? I'm (mostly) a buyer, but just assumed that a) it was somehow fakeable, and b) completely devalued and pretty much pointless since they removed the ability to neg a buyer. I don't even bother leaving any any more, doesn't seem to bother anyone.

Pity, because back in the day I used to take great pleasure in leaving surreal and obtuse feedback (positive) comments.

Well the item is back. Original reason for return was...

there is severe corrosion, the side end plate is bent out of shape, the bearings are very noisey, it is not useable .ot as described in the advert,i wish to return for a full refund including return postage, the reel damadged

Having looked closely there is a slight bend in the end. It took me a while to notice it. I'd contest very noisy bearings and severe corrosion but hey ho. Buyer blocked and it will be relisted.

Sent following message

I apologise for the delay. Like I said I was away this week. I sorted this out as soon as I got home.

I also apologise that you didn't find the item as described. My eBay feedback and rating is important to me and it was never my intention to deceive any buyer. The reel was one of my Father's who died and I must admit I don't know much about these reels - I was just clearing them out for my mother. Having looked closely I can see how you mean about one end being slightly out of shape. I honestly didn't notice this before I listed it.

No point boiling my wee wee about bad Ebayers.

You're much more apologetic than I would have been - I'd have just refunded to get rid of him and no further contact.

Some people are idiots. The skill is in spotting them soon and avoiding them.
