I'm after some advice please

I sold a MTB bike on Ebay. I stated cash on collection. I have arranged with the buyer a collection. He is now asking to pay via Ebay. My question is will he be able to demand a refund from PayPal at a later date?

He will have collected the bike in person and I have his address from the invoice. So how safe is it? So is this dodgy and I should stick to the cash on collection,or will it be ok?

I'm going to email back saying I would rather he paid cash on collection but if he insists where do I stand if he tries to claw the money back in the future?

I think you'll be ok - get him to sign a receipt when collecting it, or maybe take a photo of him picking it up, so you have evidence. It may be that he hasn't got that much cash to hand, so needs to use a credit card (hence Paypal - or has money in Paypal he wants to use) - I've done that before.
What's his feedback like?

Agree with the above, it's OK but get him to sign a receipt to say he's collected it and take a pic with him and the bike and one of him putting it into his car too.
They'll remove any "I never picked it up" discussions.

Just make him pay cash on collection as that was the deal when he bought it. If he doesn't want to then cancel the sale and relist and sell to someone who can pay cash on collection.

Collection sales are protected by eBay for the seller... the buyer has the chance to inspect before paying so has no comeback.

BUT

Paypal is awful... if the buyer makes a chargeback through his credit card, Paypal will take your money back.

Legally, you’d still be in the right to your money as item is sold as seen and collected etc but you’d have to take him to court to try and get any chargebacked money back.

Though you’d probably be fine, I’d prefer cash/bank transfer myself. Paypal can often be a source of silly problems.

I would prefer the COC option but some people use credit card for this sort of thing. So I emailed him with a suggestion of Friends and Family which he agreed to. Can he use charge back via the CC to claw it back in this case or is F&F safer?

I didn't think Paypal via Ebay would give the option of gift payment?

Personally, COC for collection, every time.

I would not expect he could do a charge back - the CC company will want to know why he's doing the chargeback, ie, what was wrong with the goods - "I send some money to my friend and changed my mind" shouldn't cut it.

F & F would appear to put all the risk on the side of the payer, so yeah, that should be ok. Payment would be outside of Ebay's terms though, as mrmonk says. But I guess it's the same as cash in that way.

If he insists, insist right back and tell him to sod off. There's 7.8 billion people on the planet, the odds are in your favour that there's going to be more than one that wants to buy your bike.

I decided to tell him coc. He came back with I don't understand so I just said I wasn't comfortable with PayPal being able to claw back the money. Not heard from him yet. 🙂

Another vote for sticking to COC as advertised, best to take the lesser risk option.
