Long story short; sold a bike in goodish nick,
Just had an email showing mullered mech hanger with chain not wrapped around mech. The guys being polite but jobs doesn't know much about bikes from the way he has described the problem. Seems like a decent sort. He may have knackered it or it may have got whack in transit, almost certainly not provable either way. Just phoned bike shop local to him, replacement £25. Do I....
a) say "got a quote for a repair mate, on you go, your problem" (I think ebay will just shaft me here)
b) offer a contribution - seems a bit of a waste of time for 12.50
c) just pay for it
Whaddya reckon? I'm getting rogered here regardless, eh?

Personally speaking I would pay the £25
You don't. He may end up making a case against you and eBay will more than likely side with him
Is the cable adjuster snapped, or fully wound out? Either way, it'll take a little more effort than just a mech hanger to index well
**** it! Hadn't seen that. Looks like the lot has had a hard whack from below. I guess I'll be forking out for a new mech then too. Piss.
(Thanks @Aidy, well spotted)
Either take it back or pay the £25
eBay will absolutely side with him as it's not as described regardless of how it ended up in that state.
He may still shaft you in feedback mind so best to humour him imo.
How much did you sell the bike for?
Assuming £25 is a reasonable chunk of the price then I’d just offer him that as compensation without mentioning the estimate from the shop. If he accept it then it closes down future noise from eBay.
What are the chances of parcelforce coughing up some dough (rhetorical/pathetically optimistic question)
@dave h not sure I'd be comfortable doing that now, knowing the mech is likely knackered
