Well I made an eBay purchase on Friday with PayPal so I reckon you might have set up the auction wrong.

Everything I've sold recently has been with PayPal. Money was in my PayPal account straight away. Last thing was a couple of days ago.

I’ve been using eBay for years - loads and loads of feedbacks - several hundred. I’d updated account details as prompted by the app - I guess that’s turned off PayPal for my incoming payments. No idea how the buyer has paid.

This is what I’ve had. The app says I’ve been paid - found another tab that suggests I should get payment tomorrow - will see if that happens before sending anything!

I won some Pace RC35 forks tonight and paid via PayPal. Had to log in though so not as integrated as usual.

Has ebay changed its Terms of Use? I noticed quite a lot of sellers are refusing paypal and requiring cash on collection. That used to be a violation seems like they don't remove the listing now though.

As far as I know you've always been able to ask for cash on collection but you always had to offer PayPal. I remember even before that there were loads of ways to pay; Postal Order, Escrow, Nochex etc. Glory days of deactivated munitions and training land mines before it became another outlet.

What are ebay charging for this service?

I sold something 2 hrs ago and the guy paid straight away via PP.

Moving forward I’d like to know if buyer / seller protection changes if PP gets knocked in the head.

All sellers will be on eBay managed payments by end of January, PayPal will still be an option but not default. For buyers PayPal will still be an option but the likes of Apple pay and Google pay will be offered and a direct eBay card checkout.

As a business using eBay I see it as a possible gain long term, but from chatting to other shops and traders the shirt term is slow and glitchy.

That was my understanding. I think you also couldn't offer a discount for cash on collection.

like many I guess I have a bank account I've linked to paypal and around 99% of its use is to fund ebay buys...I noticed the other day a seller said preferred direct transfer ...always considered having paypal access bank funds not as secure as I would like...might as well delist the link if no use in future quite liked the ease of a quick click at checkout

Exactly. And as I like Paypal I will be offering only PayPal on items I sell just as I always have. If people don't want to use PayPal then they won't be buying my items.

I like PayPal, it's my preferred choice for paying for anything on line. I hate setting up accounts and passwords with companies I will never use again.

PP take a cut directly, so you always get less than the selling price, then Ebay bill you their cut at the end of the month...

Yep, having banking info in one place (which is fairly secure PayPal) is much better than giving out banking info to all the sites I buy from however eBay don't need to convince you of anything, just continue to use PayPal as I will be doing.

a buyer will be able to pay by paypal but you wont get a paypal receipt, these funds will go into Ebay managed payments, hence monies will then transfer to your bank account..

i see this as ebay pushing to get rid of those personal sellers who are acting as a business,
they claim fees will be lower, but businesses dont get £1 FVF sales.

Yeah I got some weird email from ebay suggesting I should be vat registered, perhaps after selling off my dad's stuff over the past couple of years I guess? Only ever really use their £1 fvf these days.

No, ebay bought Paypal off Xcom (Elon Musk company) for $1.5bn in 2002. That in turn had been acquired in 2000 as part of a security company. It was split into a seperate company in 2015.

HSBC rang him asked him his online selling details, he said he was selling personal items, they disagreed. :0)

@whatyadoinsucka mostly books, medals & kilts but less than £5k in total. I've deleted the email, will have to see if it's in my trash folder. The more valuable items I sold direct to dealers as I'm pretty risk adverse.

PayPal is PayPal, if someone pays via PayPal it will go through standard process.

I'm not very clued up on the ins and outs of ebay/paypal, but I thought paypal offered an extra layer of protection (as a buyer)?

Ebay give you 30 days to raise a complaint, whereas with Paypal, it's 6 months? Then if you do raise a dispute via ebay, and they knock it back, you can then try paypal? Is that right? They (paypal) also offer free returns on some items as wel? If so, it'd seem to make sense to continue to use it (as a a buyer).

If you pay via PayPal (a third party) the transaction will be with PayPal and will not be going into any other payment system. Where did you read it, do you have a link?

@kerley he's right. It will be ebay, and not you, offering buyers the option of paying through paypal from now on. So they'll pay ebay by paypal, and ebay will pass the money to you in your ebay account. The info is here

@joebristol, if ebay says you've been paid, it should be in your ebay account. You no longer get to see how they paid etc. Is it sat there? If you want it in your own bank account you need to withdraw it. i.e. from what you say the funds have "arrived". Buyers won't be happy to wait while you transfer funds between your own accounts. This is going to cause a lot of confusion as sellers move over to managed payments I think.

exactly @ savoyad, i can imagine some sellers will now wait till moneys are in their bank account to allow them to pay at the post office to ship, as opposed instant at paypal.

@whatyadoinsucka That's a long way from someone selling a few quids worth or the odd hundred every month or so. That's second income level regardless of what the actual profit was.

Sounds a bit crap. Having the payment go straight into PayPal is quite useful. eBay's postage site is frequently down and lacks some preferred options so I often have to do it on PayPal. Suppose anyone that doesn't want eBay paying straight into their bank account now will have to set up a new separate one.

So basically I won't get my money for 4 days while eBay 'hold' it for some reason but I post the sold item when the money is in pending state. Not sure why it takes 4 days to get the money (see eBay are using clearing nonsense) when money these days moves around within minutes.

I’m in cash management for a large bank - when you do a PayPal withdrawal they must be using the faster payment infrastructure which is basically 24/7 availability. So when I get paid to PayPal I can go and select withdrawal and have the money in my account within seconds.

It seems like eBay are taking the payment instantly and then sitting on it until the next working day - then probably sending it via BACS without saying in those words that’s what they’re doing. Funds show as paid but then says ‘pending’ in my app. I assume that means they processed a BACS run yesterday and I’ll get funds tomorrow but it’s all a bit vague.

All seems odd and a bit outdated really. A buyer pays a person by PayPal but the Paypal payment actually goes to eBay instead of the buyer who then slow down the process and send the seller the money 1-4 days later.
At first I thought it was a way of them holding loads of funds for their own benefit but they claim they won't be getting interest from the money while they 'hold' it.

Yes. Obviously same email as @Dickyboy.  I just binned it as I'm about £84,700 short of the threshold! Whats more annoying is ebay won't release my funds until the buyers have given me feedback or 1 month whichever is quicker.

Just an update - got paid today by eBay for the item I sold on Sunday and which was initiated yesterday. So it can’t be a BACS payment as that wouldn’t arrive until tomorrow from Monday.

and its quite normal for eBay/Paypal to hold funds on high value items for low volume sellers, just upload tracking to Paypal and its usually released within 24 hours of the tracking showing as delivered

Just sold my first item under the bank trans, not paypal method - and where Paypal was immediate, the only thing to tell me I've been paid is an auto-generated email from ebay. I can't see money anywhere as yet. That normal now? I have to send the item before I see the money in my account?!

Yes. eBay has the money but it's on the way to you. Normally a couple of days.

You have received payment. It's in your eBay account. At some point it'll move to your bank account.

It's better if you do £1 selling fees. You literally do only pay £1. Sold about £100 worth of stuff over Easter, 4 items, £96 in my account. Also it's £1 selling this weekend!

Yep, you will be getting the money as eBay have received it but are holding it for a few days so the item has been paid for.
If you don't trust that then wait a few days before sending until the money is in your account (make sure you select option for money more regularly than once a week) and you can cover than by using a dispatch time of say 5 days on your listings.

Good that buyers can't raise fake disputes and get your money frozen for 8 days, like they could with Paypal, I suppose.

I put this down to ebay being greedy.
In the old world ebay take a fee from the seller and if paypal was used then paypal took a fee too.
However, if a sale was cash on collection then only ebay got a fee.
Ebay now do away with paypal and manage your fees so every sale (including cash sales) will now incur the ebay fee.
The new ebay fee is slighty less than the old combined ebay/paypal fees so it looks like a win, unless you're someone who sells a lot of stuff cash on collection, then you'll be shelling it much more in fees.

And if you only sell on £1 listings then you shell out a lot less in fees. Swings and roundabouts.

Yep. I only do £1 max fees now. Just save stuff up then stick it all on when the £l listing comes round. Sell for £90, get £89 is actually pretty good. And a reminder, it's £1 max fees this weekend.

Its a bit like the budget airlines. If you go in cold they'll shaft you, if you know the game then it works out OK.

Just thought I'd update this as I've had a few sales with the new payment system. Seems to take less than 2 days to get the money now. Last sale, sold Sunday evening, posted Monday lunchtime, money in my bank account Tuesday morning.

it seems to work ok, payment can be set up to pay daily (monday to friday) or Tuesdays weekly,

i set up an old account and got 3 free listings no fees. the money was put on a 30 day term, but as soon as i uploaded the tracking reference, payment released within 1-2 days, then payment follows the next day.

i've sold some cheaper stuff since and moneys became avaiable the next working day ie if your item sells on a monday, it'll be confirmed tuesday and payment to bank wednesday (hits bank noon to late afternoon)

i miss having the money in my paypal to make low value purchases online, so my credit card seems to have loads of small online purchases over the last month, with paypal it was simpler..
