You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've been getting rid of a lot of stuff lately on Ebay - all highish value but small enough to post.
I'm about to sell a couple of guitar amps that I don't want to post as they are around 20KG in weight.
If I make it collection only how does it work?
The Paypal clears before they take it away or what? When I post something tracked as soon as it is delivered the money clears in my account, I don't like the idea of anything being taken away and then the person disputing the sale.
Sorry -I'm a bit new to this.
Never use Paypal with collection. It's that simple. Cash on collection.
Ebay force you to allow Paypal on the ad, but I just state in the description that I won't accept Paypal. It's cash on collection only.
The issue is (and if you goolge it, you will see), they can take the item away, then later on ask Paypal for a refund by claiming the item is faulty or other such issue.
Cash on collection?
Be wary of any scenario where the buyer can prove payment but you cannot prove you've given them the goods. Payment via Paypal ➡ goods collected in person ➡ "goods not received" claim ➡ refund.
It's so wide open to fraud! Amazing really
I'm sure I read recently that they had finally closed this loophole...
Have a search of the bay forums and I'm sure you'll find it.
Ebay now has a code system that helps with the proof:-
I see they offer a "Signature on collection" method of protection for item over £450.
I'd still insist on cash on collection personally.
Your forced into using PayPal on collection only items now. Buyer pays before collection, has to bring a we code for the seller to scan so you can both confirm item has been collected. It's a ball ache tbh.
I wasn't aware of this having recently sold two large ish items on collection only, would have gone through FB marketplace had I known.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
Minefield.
@monkeyboyjc - this is news to me!
I have a bike selling in current auction. Can I just refuse paypal, and insist on cash? That's what I was planning to do. I have stated that in my ad.
@kid.a No idea as I've not used it from a buyers perspective yet. But both of my buyers (one sofa and one large retail fridge) said that they had to use PayPal before collection.... So fees all around. I'm pretty sure by selling on eBay it's their T&C's not yours that your supposed to adhere to, and they are trying to stop the cash only then delete ad. method people had been using.
On my ad, "cash on pickup" is a payment method I was allowed to set. I've stipulated in the ad cash. See what happens then I guess.
Just message the buyer and say cash only when you pick it up,always worked for me on larger items.

Not and stay within Ebay's T&Cs - the buyer always has the right to buy with paypal regardless of what you may write in the description....in fact just writing what you have written could be considered to be against the T&Cs...
This means that sellers must always accept payment from buyers through the payment methods they have selected in their Payment Details section of their listing, including PayPal, and must not act in any way to discourage buyers from paying by these methods
Plenty of people still write it though - no idea if there is ever a consequence.
Yeah there's a code system so you can prove they've taken it.
Word of warning though, Paypals' system doesn't work well with eBays, despite them being the same company - so whilst eBay can confirm it's been taken Paypal might just ask you to wait 3 weeks to get your money. Dicks.
But both of my buyers (one sofa and one large retail fridge) said that they had to use PayPal before collection…
Ebay do (used to?) make it quite difficult to navigate past the PayPal payment before being able to contact seller about collecting, so might have just been buyers not looking too hard. One thing I did find out after refunding one PayPal payment before accepting cash instead, is that refunding the PayPal payment still gets charged a small amount 😕
eBay and PayPal are not the same company any more.
there is a QR collection code system that Ebay requires you to use, so far in my experience is rarely works when it needs to i.e when you are standing on someone's door step / vs versa..
I like the old way more
Buyer turns up when agreed...
"well here's the bike"
"Oh very nice, yes I like it, you have really looked after it, here's the cash"
"Thank you very much. Yes, I'll be sad to see it go, anyway you enjoy it, tada"
But I guess there's more opportunity to make money forcing Paypal on us.
The other change that's a problem is that PayPal have changed their rules so that if you get a PayPal payment refunded, they still charge the fees. So if you ask the buyer to pay by PayPal to secure the sale, then refund you and pay cash, it costs you the PayPal fee.
I'm not sure if eBay care about private sellers any more, they just seem to be killing their own market.

You've just described Facebook Marketplace. Their buyer / seller protection is "good luck!" It's the online equivalent of sticking a card up on the small ads board in Tesco.
The benefit of eBay over FB and Gumtree, might be a wider audience. I've had some bloke drive 4+ hrs (each way) across the county to collect a bike he bought from me on eBay before.
I sell using Reverb and have had a good experience. Posting an amp is usually around the £50 mark if I remember correctly (I’ve posted Diezel, Marshall, EVH etc with no issues).
Oooh! What are their fee's like?

Usually, you list it for collection only and you get a bunch of people asking how much you want to post it.
I try to avoid collection only on ebay these days, its geared toward the paypal & recorded post method, which is usually painless. Local FB groups for collection only sales have worked better for me with bulky things.
Reverb?
5% I think - used to be 3%
I prefer it to eBay
I've just stuck them on FB Marketplace to see if there is any interest. I'll check out Reverb later.
Anyone want to bet on how long before someone asks if I'll swap for an XBox?
