Sold an item and buyer paid for it (postage standard 2nd class RM) then they messaged requesting I send it 1st class tracked. Item value 21 quid and postage difference £2.50.
My understanding is once item is paid the invoice cannot be revised so my options are:
- Suck up the extra cost it's only a few quid
- Send a PayPal invoice for extra outside of eBay
He paid late I sent one reminder before he paid, got a sob story about why he paid late and also why he wants it tracked so he doesn't miss the postie.
I've got a bad feeling about this transaction...
Is it really £2.50 difference? Looking on RM and postage with 'signed for' is about £1 more.
If it were me I'd go with the cheapest (maybe even Packlink) postage and get a signature.
He's paid for 2nd class so maybe go 2nd class with signature.
I sense a 'did not arrive' claim if not..
'Tracking' on 1st and 2nd class signed for isn't taking in that the sender can watch it's progress - it only provides an update whenever they try to deliver.
However, as a seller, never ever ever send anything not signed for as a minimum - otherwise you open yourself up to non-arrival claims. (That said, if it's small or medium a parcel, RM had started to provide a confirmation of delivery number - don't know if this is still the case). The onus is on the as the seller
Not sure about the actual logistics of trying to pursue extra cost I'm afraid.
to get payment simply ask him to send it to you via paypal
Yep, get him to send you the extra and then send 1st class tracked.
I got a sob story about him being taken to hospital with a seizure hence late payment.
Then he wants tracked as he lives somewhere remote and unable to collect parcel from RM depot due to his disability so wants to know when it's coming and doesn't miss the postie. And he needs the item ASAP hence the 1st class ask. It may all be genuine but that is by the by I guess.
Yup I do risk a non delivery claim when I send unsigned but for low value items I just declare value get a receipt from RM and claim if it goes missing.
Small parcel 2nd Class on RM website is 2.95, 24 hr tracked is 5.46 with signature 5.82.
As I suspected situation stinks and in the buyers favour. But I ain't gonna lose sleep or waste emotions over a couple of quid.
Struggling to see what your issue is here, they've asked a reasonable question and offered to pay.
They haven't offered to pay
He hasn’t offered to pay but have you asked him to?
They haven’t offered to pay
As above, just tell him its an additional X pounds for 1st class tracked postage as that wasn't a service you offered and ask him to pay PP gift
Time it takes to sort out his request, you might as well bung it in the post 2nd class
Tracking isn’t for them, it’s for you.
And RM tracking isn’t real tracking.
Fair enough about the tracking. Also tracked gotta go via a Service Centre not a RM branch which is an hour round trip into town for me. FFS.
If he'd paid Saturday I'd have posted Monday he'd have got it by tomorrow. FFS.
I'm just gonna message and tell him it's being posted 2nd class.

Cancel the sale and refund would be my approach with this I'm afraid.

You'll lose the paypal fee if you do that, and get a black mark on your seller account.
Just reply and say it's already been sent.
Any courier will leave a card and they can re arrange delivery at their leisure.
Not quite the same but I've had a few times where the eBay calculation for postage has been wrong and I've had to pay extra (sometimes quite a lot - handlebars for example are a fkn ballache). Just sucked it up for the sake a few quid. Lifes too short.

Can guarantee you'll get hit with an 'item not arrived' claim then.
Rule for the future, never ever offer any postage methods on Ebay that aren't tracked or at least signed for. It's to protect you, not the buyer.
Personally, I'd Paypal invoice for the difference in postage, and once paid, send it tracked. If I had enough margin in the sale, then I'd just suck it up. I normally offer free postage and just price it in to start with. Then I have complete control over the postage method and a buyer can never complain about the postage price on the package not matching what they've paid.

1st or 2nd class tracked is via RM/PO, the 24 or 48 hours is service centre, Ive fallen for this before.
Yup cheers all. I sucked it up and sent it 1st Class Signed. That'll knock another £1.48 off the £20.44 profit after ebay and PP fees LOL.
I've sent him a nice message to say Tracked is difficult as I also live in a rural area an hour round trip to my Service Centre. But as he requested it went in the post 1st class today (and signed for to cover my arse). I mentioned this was at my expense.
Not sure how to invoice him as the Paypal payment doesn't give his email address or any option to send another invoice? I ain't gonna lose sleep over £1.50 I'd just rather get it to him and play nicely keep my feedback.
