I'm selling a large tent on ebay, weight is approx 25kg. I don't really want to post it, but obviously I have a much better chance of selling if I can.
I can post it by Parcelforce, but a bit unclear about Paypal policies and whether the service I use complies with the tracking/signature requirements.
If the buyer arranges the courier and pickup, does that get me off the hook as regards to lost/damaged parcels, and claims of items not turning up? Or is it still the case that as the seller, I am obliged to delivery the parcel safely?

I'd say that if the agreement is between you are the buyer that they will pick it up, whether this is in person or an agent of that person (a courier), then you're responsibility ends when the parcel is handed to them/their agent.
As the seller you are obliged to get the parcel in to his possession.
Since you're going to have to be there when the courier does the pick up anyway, I'd suggest the postage is not arranged by the buyer.
I think the buyer pick up thing is really an issue when all other buyers are prepared to post you aren't. With s/h tents the majority 90%+ are pick up only so it less of a problem as long as you don't live in the middle of nowhere. We have just sold a tent on e bay and had no problems getting interest and selling it with pick up only.

Not quite... the seller only has to comply with the terms under which the item is sold. So, if the seller states it is for collection only, then it is up to the buyer to arrange for the item to be collected.
On your second point, I'd probably agree, it would likely be more convenient for the seller to arrange postage as that can be done when it suits them, rather than when the buyer arranges for it to be collected...
