Is it safe to eat smoked fish that's been grilled the previous day and is is now cold?

If it’s been in a fridge yes. Left out on the counter I’d probably not.

Probably - but I wouldn't.
Why would you want to? Mackerel is cheap.

Of course it is! Loads of salad recipes use cooked, cold fish.

Definitely safe. I know from experience. Especially smoked Macky.

You’ve never ever been Macky bashing in summer. I can tell.

So just to confirm: purchased smoked mackerel then grilled yesterday then refrigerated and it's okay to eat cold? Thanks

Obviously you know me personally 😒

Not sure what mack bashing is but if it means catching way more fish than I need then no, I haven't. In my lifetime the availability of mackerel to catch has massively dropped..sure, if you find a shoal you can pull out dozens, but the shoals are few and far between now. We used to see the shoals come into the shore from our house and would run down with a rod and spinner and catch a few. Haven't seen them that close in for more than 20 years

I would put it back in the sea.

Yes I would that without a seconds thought. Smoked mackerel is pretty bombproof. I have eaten it well past its sell by date and all that happens it the texture gets softer.

Not true. Smoked fish is histamine rich and can build up over time. For someone with a histmaine allergy, this could be deadly.

Well you should move then. Loads on the NE coast lately. Mind you if you want any, it’s carnage on the piers. And for your info, I’ve had the grand total of 1 this year, off Chesil Beach. It went back in as it was undersized, plus it wriggled off before I could un hook it anyway which was lucky as Mackarel are easily damaged during handling & can die even after being put back in the water, did you know that?*
Happy now?

There are conflicting reports on this subject.

Too right, I haven’t had enough Mackerel this year! Not like some people.
Or it could be because I’ve run out of Citalopram.
Or I’m just intolerant.
One of the 2 anyway.

Histamine allergy?! You've made that up haven't you? Pretty sure if someone was actaully allergic to histamine then they wouldn't be eating smoked fish in the first place...

Technically everyone is allergic to histamine.

Histamine toxicity. It’s similar to an allergy for obvious reasons. If I recall correctly, those who suffer have a lower tolerance to histamine. Some fish contain more histamine than others.

So yes it’s pretty harmless unless you have histamine intolerance, but that’s like saying peanuts aren’t safe.

histamine intolerance

Sorry, yeah should have said intolerance rather than allergy.

https://food.r-biopharm.com/news/histamine-intolerance-fish/

Also occurs in matured cheese. I've had to deal with a few incidents in nurseries where toddlers and infants have had a severe reaction to being given Extra mature cheese (usually in a sauce such as as macaroni cheese).

We carry out histamine testing on our older cheese as part of our QMS (although there are currently no legal limits set)and when it comes to fish its presence is controlled by legislation. https://www.seafish.org/trade-and-regulation/contaminants/histamine/

Do it quite often.
Caught half a dozen last week and cooked them all at once , then ate them in various guises over the next couple of days.

Even reheated some in a spinach and mackerel omelette. Not had any issues yet.

Used to mackerel bash when I first started , but find it better to fish in light gear now and get them one at a time

Some people eat cold fish all the time, with no ill effects whatsoever.

Are you in the office? Stick it in the microwave for a few minutes

Actually, even if you're at home...

Stuff said smoked fish behind curtains / sofa in chosen neighbours lounge at your peril.

Having had scromboid poisoning (histamine overdose) from a tuna salad that was left out on a hot day, I don't recommend. It can be due to tuna processing and is not destroyed by the canning process. And it can be fatal for the elderly. Suffice to say that I had the most impressive rash and heart rate increase you can imaging. Took an entire box of cetirizine. It is also a notifiable disease and environmental health had to inspect the restaurant after I reported it.

Not recommended. If you grilled and kept it in the fridge, fine.

Anchovies laid in an X across sliced tomato with the tiniest drizzle of balsamic vinegar for the win.

Cold fish par excellence IMHO.
