I got a server-timeout (because our internet is so awful) while making a payment to EDF so I remade the payment thinking it hadn't gone through but it had. So the kind people at EDF decide to send me a cheque FFS! WTF YOY SEND ME CHECK FOR!?!?!?

I can't remember what to do with it. Am I supposed to make some kind of dedicated trip to the bank, whereever the F that is these days, to pay it in? Can I just scan it in? Without an APP for that!? UH life!

Some banks you can upload a photo, some you can send it by post, some you can pay in at the post office.....

Who do you bank with? Even RBS let you scan them via their app, and they’re ****ing useless

some banking apps you can just take a picture of the cheque and pay it in that way. No need to visit a branch of your bank

IME, the Lloyds app (like many banking apps), takes a picture, pays it in, is a done deal in about a minute.

Of course one quick google could have told you that, so as a stealth rant about EDF I give you 3/10.

HSBC, yes can do it with their app. Just need to install it, pay the cheque, and then promptly uninstall as I otherwise don't need it.

That's not fair, I even wrote check instead of cheque in the title without realizing, and carefully resisted correcting typos 🙁

Do you uninstall all your apps while you aren't using them?

Or keep it for the next time you need it (and also avoid the need to have paper statements every month, do online banking from your phone, keep an eye on your balance etc).

Do you have the security key generator? If not then don't delete the app, it's a monumental faff trying to verify the app without it. And once you have the app it can act as the security key.

Why not? I is a decent app, I can pay folk within minutes via it, check balance, pay cheques. No more posted bank statements etc.

A good banking app is a win IMO.

I tried to pay in a cheque at the PO this weekend. All they do is put it in an envelope and send it, (for NatWest anyway) so there's no real benefit over doing that yourself.

£500 limit on their in-app system too, although that's not likely to worry a one time utility bill overpayment.

Your bank’s cash point. Always used to work in the 20th century, which is about the last time I saw a cheque.

How do you log in to your account otherwise?

I'm with HSBC, I can't do squat on the website without generating 15 codes on the app first.

I'd rather they just let me use the browser on my desktop like I do for every other aspect of banking. If they could let me use my favourite 2FO app too, that would be nice.

I figured I was being generous, one point for misspelling the thread title, one point for some caps,
last point for a smattering of typos.

Don't 2FO make shoes?

Sorry, Apps are secure, well as long as your phone is. A banking App on a supported iPhone with up to date software is really, very, very secure, if you want to go the extra mile you could use Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 app to make the connection even more secure.

I don't believe you'll be able to pay a cheque in digitally via a web browser, they'll also be slightly less secure than an app, but only really due to the risk of man-in-the-middle attacks, mostly.

Anyway, if you don't want to use an app, it will depend on your bank, some and what's easiest to you. You can post them, take them to a branch or the post office, if they have an arrangement with the PO, not all do.

(former Bank staff, now IT and studying Cyber Security).

Stop complaining and either install the app or go to the bank FFS.

Forgotten the secure key already 🙂 ?

The bank is shut when I'm not at work.

Why are EDF even sending me a cheque anyway? Is it to offset their green energy?

... via a web browser, they’ll also be slightly less secure than an app

Can you explain that further, please? I'm not disagreeing, just don't know about phone security. I have a First Direct account, which is part of HSBC, and their app is used to generate the 2FA code for the browser. I've not been happy with that; as I see it that there's no 2FA on the app, as the app both operates the account and provides the 2FA key - and the app remembered my user ID without me telling it to. So the app seems less secure to log into; is the traffic more secure? I would have thought that my PC sitting behind my NAT router using https was as secure as using the 4g connection where I'm CGNAT'ed with potentially over 200 strangers, but I don't know enough about it.

I don’t have the secure key fob now, HSBC phased it out, just need the app.
I think it’s brilliant, there is really no need to have a local bank branch any more. Especially now having nearly every transaction done electronically means actual cash is pretty rare in our household.
