…seems a long long time since it’s been on screens.
To the regiment.
I’ll stay on my own
Phil and Nige, the two cops were based on two long since retired neighborhood bobbies in Stockport. I never met them personally but know people who did and from what they've said, the storylines aren't a million miles away from the truth.
Loved this the first time - beautifully written and wonderfully observed on many levels.
Definitely worth a rewatch.
I bet he helps them out when they're busy
Thanks for the PSA! box now set to record the whole lot, one of my all-time favourite shows, a proper gem!
Phil and Nige
Oh crikey I'd forgotten those two. That laugh!
Superb. Bought the box set off Amazon and still watch it occasionally, hilarious.
Saw this in the paper yesterday. Guardian commented that it's a comedy that probably wouldn't see the light of day in this day same age. I'm glad it did though.
Just watched Episode 1. I'd forgotten Maxine Peake was in it, must be about the first thing she appeared in.
Phil and Nige, "Lowfield Road estate, it's like Beirut". Hehe.
Somehow, I missed it first time round. Just watched the first episode and enjoyed it immensely.
Early Doors is the work of genius!
It’s one of those, like Fawlty Towers, where there’s so many great moments that you can’t believe there’s only 12 episodes.
Looking forward to rewatching them all again
I’d forgotten Maxine Peake was in it, must be about the first thing she appeared in.
She was in Dinnerladies before it, another Northern comedy of quiet genius.
Mildly interesting fact, Maxine is a keen roady, often out with the Rapha ladies
Early Doors a perfect example of just doing enough, two series was all that was needed
hasnt aged well. not a one-legged trans chinaman anywhere! disgusting.
i jest of course. i was gonna write how well it aged. I re-watched some Royle Family recently and they wouldnt get away with some of that stuff nowadays, Jim calling Anthony a puff etc; but Early Doors doesnt really have any of that - then i realised that the regulars of the Grapes are not exactly a very diverse bunch!
still. perfect TV!
She was in Dinnerladies before
Ah that predates it eh? Yes Dinnerladies was great too - but Victoria Wood, so figures.
then i realised that the regulars of the Grapes are not exactly a very diverse bunch!
Bit of an echo chamber?
Great show, I saw the stage play at The Lowry a few years back. Brilliant set, the flat was positioned above the bar.
Saw I live at the The Lowry too, it was brilliant
Keep an ear out for the call signs on Phil & Nigel’s radios e.g Tango Whisky Alpha Tango….
An amazing comedy which i didn't really get when it came out.
After growing up in inner city Manchester, now i'm a bit older it's fabulous. Some great moments from the writers. If anyone grew up in a working class area they'll totally relate to it! I've sat in pubs and listened to conversations like that!
Funnily enough i downloaded the Early Doors playlist on Spotify a few weeks ago.
@White101 i would have loved to have gone to that, but alas i no longer live in the area!
saw the stage show too - amazing!
if you have the DVD you probably seen it already but there is Craig and Phil's commentary on the first series on Youtube. terrific watch!
Rewatching now and then rather than binging. The recap of season 1 at the start of season 2 is a superb piece of television.
First TV Role for James McAvoy too. To the regiment!
I wish I was there!
Finished watching this last night - for the second time.
Loved it.
Nigel in that last episode was something else.
I must have missed something because we were given this a long time ago, watched it for 5 minutes and thought it looked naff, never gave it a chance and it’s been sitting on the shelf so long DVDs have virtually become obselete…
I think that having lived in Manchester helps a lot. I remember loving it.
It's one you need to get into - 5 mins of watching won't do it.
We were the same with The Royle Family when that first came out then grew to love it - it still provides most of the sayings we use in our house. 🙂
I think that having lived in Manchester helps a lot
It is a very northern, possibly Mancunian, sense of humour. I love it.
Incredibly tender at times too; Tommy putting The Good Life on the jukebox, the whip round for Eddie and Joan, and "you only get one dad", "I know, and you're mine" has had the tears rolling down my cheeks the, I dunno, eight times I've seen it?
I wasn't convinced when I started watching it but it grew on me. I might watch it again 🙂
It's so well written. It's fantastic.
One sitcom that's never gonna be touched was smoking room....
I wasn’t convinced when I started watching it
What?! It's sublime! The characters,. writing,. timing. Hugely underated thing.

It's definitely up there with the best of Victoria Wood's stuff.
I'd totally forgotten about the smoking room. I loved that one.
Early doors is very good but the wife won't watch it so I have to watch it solo.
I also enjoyed Craig Cash's 'Rovers' sitcom, not quite as good as Early doors but still decent.
