Purchased a frame on eBay, seller is in Switzerland/Germany. He's quoted me €80 for DHL from Switzerland, or €30 from Germany (but 19% VAT will apply, not sure why on a secondhand frame from a private seller?)... seems a bit steep to me, but having never bought from over there before, not sure if it actually is?

Question is what frame is it this time, and what's happened to all the other ones you've bought in the last couple of weeks?

No vat payable on purchases from Germany, they're in the EU, don't know what happens to purchases from Switzerland though. DHL isn't cheap- probably fairly close to the cost.

Fence sitters? what's that mean? 😕

It's a 1995 'new old stock' steel Ibis Mojo, too good to pass up 😳

Been on a bit of a bike binge these past few weeks, 'tis true... but sorting it out now, few things being sold on etc as I actually decide what I want and consolidate back down to a realistic level! 🙄

BTW, that Indy Fab fell through, the seller ended up mucking me around and sold locally, the basteward (ironic, I know 😆 )

Surprised if German VAT would apply if private seller, are you sure he does not mean it would be EUR 30 +VAT for courier?

"Hello, Shipping to GB is EUR 80.-- from Switzerland to you, if you like I can ship from Germany, EUR 30.--, but then will comes VAT 19% from EUR 505.-- so the cost will be all includen ship from Germany to GB EUR 630"

Seriously? So you can look at it for a bit then sell on?

I had one btw, did not like it.

Are you on a one man mission to buy up all of Europe's second hand bikes ?

Nah, this one's a keeper... it's joining the Bow Ti (which will never be sold!) and I'm getting a Mojo HD 140 next year as well 🙂

I had one btw, did not like it.

You mentioned that on my other Ibis thread, what was the issue with it? Mine's an early one, with the 'handjob' canti hanger (how cool is that thing btw?), looks to be quite sprightly in it's tubing, but will know more once it turns up!

Are you on a one man mission to buy up all of Europe's second hand bikes ?

Nope... this it it for me (unless a Ti Mojo appears from somewhere!), promise 🙂

Did you end up getting that [s]pile of scaffolding[/s] Szazbo as well, in the end?

Mine was really stiff, lifeless and unforgiving, not what steel is for IMO.

Yep, but that's a good deal, comes with an 130mm Ibis ti stem and 580mm Ibis ti handlebars (worth a reasonable bit on their own), plus a bunch of other retro bits... all in for £300 🙂

It's an odd looking frame to be sure... not what you'd call 'aesthetically pleasing'! 😆

so what's the consensus, is €80 too much? Actually... just looking at Parcel2go, I could send the same package to him for less than £30 with DHL Europlus (plus insurance), so he's defo taking the micky, unless he's included insurance (though this is only an extra £25 or so...).

I think you're asking the wrong question.

He can ship from Germany and it will cost you €630. He can also ship it from Switzerland and it will cost you €585. Which do you want?

Psychle, I hope you're taking the pee:

Have sent the buyer an invoice for payment, £129 inc £40 for DHL Europlus insured to £200... he'll have them next week, fingers crossed they're going to a good home...

recent shipping quote for screaming bargain ebay retro loveliness. Only [s]your[/s] oops, that one was probably a quarter the weight, a quarter the price and a twentieth the parcel size.

If you really want it stop moaning and cough up.

[edit] 3 thoughts:
1) shoulda negotiated shipping before you bid? Especially on a something as large as a frame.
2) was it an auction? Was the seller hoping for a little more?
3) is this seller also used to one method of shipping and hasn't really looked at all cheaper options?
2)

Just FYI and to clear this up once and for ****in all (hopefully!), in the end they were sent via RM for £20 insured... so there ! 😉 And, DHL Europlus is approx the same price (£18-£23.50 + VAT) up to a certain size... thanks for bringing it up though, most relevant 🙄

I suspect that "2) was it an auction? Was the seller hoping for a little more?" is probably the case here... ironic isn't it? 😆

Having stuff shipped from Switzerland can be a big ball ache if customs decide to question it (which they probably will do), at which point its import duty and vat added on to total cost including postage.

I think he means that if he ships from Germany, he will have already taken care of it, if he ships from Switzerland you will be hit for the duties separately.

the stars'n'stripes one was a monster old thread, did you really think no-one would remember? 😆

I reckon you could do a lot worse than digging about a bit to find a cheaper shipping method which is also secure for the seller (ie tracked and insured) and suggesting it to them. As with your shifters, a saving in shipping to you is also a 5% saving in paypal fees to the seller too ie damage limitation if they thought they would get more for the frame.

Might be worth bearing in mind that we might enjoy better value for money on parcels etc here than in switzerland. (£30+25 insurance for a spangly frame from here to switzerland comapres with 80 euros th opoosite way round.) Every so often I get international buyers query my overseas post, and I have to link them to the relevant royal mail page to show them I am giving them a genuine postage cost.

Oh, I know it won't be forgotten... it was sorted out in the end though, so it'd be nice to be 'forgiven' 😉

Fair enough, didn't quite twig like that in my mind! Have emailed him to find out whether the €80 includes insurance or not...
