My wife's iPad appears to have died and a lot of what she uses it for is reading so I was considering an e-reader for her (and maybe another iPad if she actually misses it, I suspect she won't except for reading). Our library uses OverDrive which I think is what she usually uses to get books from.

A kindle is the obvious choice except I think can't be used with OverDrive.

Is there another option worth looking at or should I just accept the inevitable and get her a Kindle with some kind of Amazon subscription?

Cheers 🙂

If you download from overdrive, then use calibre to convert to azw3 and you can use with a kindle. Its a pretty seamless operation. You may need a plug in for calibre to strip the drm.

Yes you need to plug into the computer. Worth having Calibre as a library management tool if she reads a lot anyway.

Cheers, I think unfortunately that would see it not being used. She (we both) so rarely ever use a computer (although I am typing this on one as I've been trying to recover the iPad).

It really needs to be manageable just on the e-reader & if really necessary a phone

Just use a Kobo reader, which natively support Overdrive.

Thanks, that might be the answer I’m looking for, I’ll check it out.

What happens if our library switches over to a new system, does it then become useless?

Or are there other ways to get books? I’ve never looked in to it before and only really know about Kindles.

I’ll have to actually check what she uses, I was hoping to surprise her with it. I shall have to do some digging.

@Flaperon

Kobo Clara just arrived, before I open it do you know what the deal is worth Libby? Apparently she had switched over to using Libby on the iPad - is overdrive about to be phased out?

I think Libby is just a front-end to Overdrive so it should be transparent. That is just a guess though!

I'd try it first and just return the Kobo if it doesn't work.

Cheers, tried now and seems to be working 👍 Had to create a new Overdrive account for some reason but books that are borrowed in the Libby account on phone show up on the Kobo.

Doesn’t appear to sync progress between Libby (on phone) and Kobo but I think that might be because signed in on two different accounts now. Will investigate later.

Edit: No actual way to sign in to Libby, seems to just work of library card details?
