Haha, my dad collected a bunch of old vapes off the street to harvest their batteries and build a rechargeable battery powered radio.

It's mad that the disposable vapes have rechargeable batteries in, which are actually quite powerful - I forget the numbers but I'm pretty sure they were mostly at least 1000ah.

I think for this type of thing you need a deep understanding of electronics, and have the testing equipment to check for potential dangers from a bad battery.

Certainly not a diy thing to do on the kitchen table for the majority.

I read the Guardian story earlier this week. I don’t know how that guy keeps on going. I doubt I could after that.

Exactly my thining, I don't think I'd want to be alive after that. I don't know how he gets through the day. ****ing tragic.

The guardian story is heartbreaking.

I am not sure the guy in the independent with the vape ebike battery is 100% sure of what he's doing given the language he is using "There’s 10 strands of batteries and each strand has got seven batteries". I think he's describing a 10s7p battery, and it should proabably have a BMS with temperature monitoring. Looks like he's soldered the connections and used push fit wire connectors with a lot of exposed wire?? i thought they needed spot welding to prevent damage. But I'm no expert either...

Out of interest, what precautions do people take with ebikes. Store battery outside, or in shed? Some kind of fireproof storage container? It's a bit worrying so many people are killed in fires caused by them.

It’s because you’re reliant on the bms (battery management system)to balance the charging and monitor each cell so more complexity and more cost.

When the quality and design of this is skimped you get bad results.

It’s a bit worrying so many people are killed in fires caused by them.

TBH it was 11 people last year and there was 311 killed from house fires, there were also 1,645 people killed in road accidents.

In the big picture it’s not that many, obvs not fun if it’s you.

Can’t change it but it’s road collisions , the other headliners of  Road collisions are

29,643 killed or seriously injured (KSI) casualties
132,063 casualties of all severities

Part of the problem is that, like phone chargers, people will just buy a cheap charger from eBay that, like so many other consumer electronics, is made in China with no real oversight, and will likely bypass government regulation. Or else people will just glom together some half-assed charger from something never intended to charge an e-bike, and will suffer the consequences. Cheap Chinese e-bikes or scooters with cheap chargers will be just as dangerous.
I certainly wouldn’t have an e-bike in the house, I’d fix up a covered over shelter outside next to the bins for charging, but then my bikes have never been in the house either.
My heart goes out to the chap who lost his family - I struggle enough sometimes with losing Jo, I can’t comprehend losing a complete family as well as my home; I don’t think I could ever cope with that.

E-bike charging for me is done during the day only in a concrete garage using a timer set for 5 hrs max. Once they are charged, it all gets switched off... Two houses in our village were burnt to the ground from e-bike fires.

I'm hoping Specialized kit is a little more robust, I think the house fires were Chinese things on permanent charge 24/7 and more modern houses here are mostly wooden.

I liked the picture with water all over it 🙂

TBH what a total mess,I’ve not arsed about with this stuff for years but if I was building a battery pack,I’d probably get hold of some modular 3d printed end caps for those batteries ,that interlink and spot weld tab them and probably some funky connectors and wire with crimping.

I’d also probably be looking at  https://endless-sphere.com/sphere/forums/battery-technology.14/

To make sure I was making something in line with the current thinking.

My last post on this 🙂 but if your still here it’s an interesting watch.

The blokes dream of people making their  own batteries from disposable vapes , I’m not sure.

TLDR The quality of the cells also have a part to play as well as good engineering/bms.

@doris5000 There's a decent argument for banning single use vapes.
