I think I may have been a dick.
Have mentioned this before but there is a lady and young daughter who ride through the park on a registered e scooter taking a shortcut.
It's a proper park with cyclists , dogs off leads ,mums with prams and school kids.
Each entrance has the wiggly scaffold to stop motorbikes.
This morning she was stopped at the bottom of a slope waiting for people to get out of the way , just like I would if I was at the top going down on my push bike.
So I had another word saying how she was riding a motorbike in the park. Then her little daughter piped up saying " I'm on my way to school" . At that point I felt like the grumpiest rambler in the world.
If she didn't ride through the park she would have to join the gridlock of the one way system to get to school.
She was riding sensibly and doing no one any harm yet I had felt the need to moan.
If it was young lads I probably wouldn't feel bad but because of the nice little girl I feel like a prick.
Am I a bad person?
No your right.
Can't have cake and eat it.
Regardless of the fuel source it's a moped. If it was a petrol engine would you have been questioning it ? Where does the line get drawn ? If I drive my car through the park (albe it carefully and considerately )is that ok to avoid the traffic ?
Am I a bad person?
Worse than the Nazis.
Yes, but only because it seems somewhat hypocritical (I'm sure you're lovely otherwise 😉 ) Why were you cycling through the park, same reason as the lady? Maybe all bikes should be banned from parks as they can go just as fast!
She was riding sensibly and doing no one any harm yet I had felt the need to moan.
Isn't riding sensibly and doing no harm how (thoughtful) MTBers justify riding on footpaths?
If that's what she was doing, why not live and let live? It would be different if she was tearing around and trying to run over the pedestrians.
You mean a scooter with the little wheels and long stem to a small handle thing? And do they both ride it or just the little girl? I wouldn't have said anything, not sure what the point of doing so would be. I'd have thought she'd be better off on a normal version though to get a bit of exercise.
What outcome were you hoping for? Would you have questioned a bloke doing the same?
Just an odd thing to do imo.
If the OP is talking about an electric moped type thing, not a micro scooter, then no I don't think the OP was wrong. If it was a petrol powered one, there would be no issue, its not permitted. End of. Legally the moped is still a moped and the method propulsion is irrelevant in this respect.
Just because someone is taking their kid on it, means nothing. If they drove their car through there because they were going to school, would that be alright?
I do understand the OPs feeling conflicted though.
Daft. I have an e scooter, it's cool. If that makes you angry wait till you hear that I've changed the firmware on mine and it'll now do 20mph on the flat if you're brave enough.
Does sound a bit dickish, aye.
It was a full size vespa type scooter.
Clarification needed. Scooter as in annoying kids down skatepark who should mannup and buy a board or BMX or scooter as in moped.
If it was young lads I probably wouldn’t feel bad but because of the nice little girl I feel like a prick.
If it was young lads, you would probably have been shanked if you had said something innit..
I noticed that in Holland, electric and motor scooters share the cycle lanes with bicycles, and that seems to work ( they were not even wearing helmets !!). End of the day if she careful and courteous then I wouldn't have a problem with it, as said above , a bell end on a pushbike could be more dangerous
Ah missed your reply sorry. You are correct IMO.
If it was something like this ridden two up its not on really. The eletric motor doesn't make any difference they shouldn't be in the park. I could drive my car in a park in a safe and curteous manner, wouldn't make it right.

P.s their on ebay for £1495. Quite fancy one myself.
It had a number plate as well so no grey area of its classification.

Guess what speed those are limited too.
why doesn't the daughter just ride it to school?
bbbbrrrRRRAAAAPPPPP!!!
hang on electric scooters don't make that noise.
ssschhhhwwWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEFFFFFfffff.
It wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest but then again i do ride my bike on the pavements and through pedestrian areas. Perhaps if the roads and infrastructure was brought up to a safe standard and dickheads were taken from the roads then you may have a point but until then.....crack on with your scooter
How did they get a full size moped in if it had the 'scaffolding' at the entrance, but yeah a full size moped is taking the piss - still probably wouldn't have said anything as not much point really.
The entrances I go through have the scaffolding which leads me to believe that she must come past the pond where even cycling will get you lynched.
Is it legal for the wee girl to be riding pillion on it?
If that makes you angry wait till you hear that I’ve changed the firmware on mine and it’ll now do 20mph on the flat if you’re brave enough.
I was nearly taken out the other day by someone doing 20mph+ on the pavement on a hacker scooter thing, went past me within inches, he wasn't at all bothered about it. Would have hospitalised me had he hit me.
Is it legal for the wee girl to be riding pillion on it?
Only if the driver has their full license and the little girl has their helmet on. . If they are on a CBT or the girl has no helmet then no it's not.
I could drive my car in a park in a safe and curteous manner, wouldn’t make it right.
You need to get an electric car as that must be different.
If she has insurance then surely she's breaking the terms of the policy by not using a public highway and could potentially invalidate her personal liability cover. Really, she's being pretty stupid carrying a young passenger who presumably could easily fall off if a dog ran in front of the scooter or indeed any scenario? The child is being put at risk surely.
The Netherlands are cracking down on the motorscooter sharing bicycle infrastructure at the moment.
