"....production of the Corrale (hair straightener), in Malaysia and the Philippines, has been hit by the coronavirus outbreak.
"It has caused problems, we have some components made in China," chief executive Sir James Dyson said, adding he was "hoping to overcome" the issue.
Dyson shifted production from the UK to Asia in 2002 and last year announced it was also moving its HQ to Singapore"

I am personally devastated for him...
What’s the point of your thread?
Are you saying that you think £399 is more than you would pay for your hair straighteners, or that you can’t wait to buy some when they eventually get to market ? 🤷♂️
Or the less obtuse one that karma is biting him in the ass for moving production offshore.
He's not the only company that's been hit by production issues in China due to Corona. But he's the one that bleats to the media.
Are you suggesting if he'd not moved production out of the UK Dyson wouldn't still have "some components made in China" in the finished product? I think that is more of a stretch than a 400 price tag for hair straighteners.
In 2006 the 54 billionaires in England paid just £14.7 million in tax, collectively
£9 million of that was paid by Jimmy Dyson
In 2010, Dyson's company paid 88 per cent of its total tax bill in Britain, giving the Exchequer £50m.
Maybe he thinks the system in Singapore is fairer to all?
Especially with Amazon/Google/Facebook not paying anything, and actually taking taxpapyer money for 'job creation'

Meh
While it means that his hair straighteners won't get made, it also means in the real world that if any of our key national infrastructure goes pop it won't be getting fixed. Telecoms, gas transmission systems, water, electrical etc.
For example if you want bits for an industrial gas turbine chances are it's coming from the north of italy or China. This is a real problem.
Or the less obtuse one that karma is biting him in the ass for moving production offshore.
Oh so you would prefer your £399 hair straighteners to be £499.99, but at least they would be made in the UK.
Same with all these bloody bike companies that get their bikes made in China, I want to pay more because it’s ethically correct
Sounds like the normal level of British jealousy when confronted by a sucsessfull person.
I want to pay more because it’s ethically correct
Even the ethics issue of being UK based is a bit unsound IMO. He moved production to use the space for design and development so actually employed more people in the UK after production moved to the far east. Those were frequently recent graduates getting useful training and experience.
I think many companies move production offshore without fully considering the consequences - the logical conclusion of this is that the full process of design/build and (here's where one would expect them to be bothered) management will eventually follow to reduce inefficiencies.
There may be counterbalancing factors, e.g. there are advantages to having the design/development team close to the main market.
I'm not fully sure how I feel about this - do I or any assembly line worker here have more of a "right" to work than someone in a lower cost country? Bearing in mind how cheaply and efficiently goods can be shipped around the globe (a few years ago I heard 1000mpg/tonne from larger container vessels, and the emissions from port to market are generally higher than from the far east to UK port). But then it doesn't seem fair for the UK to become a service industry centre and consume products made by the rest of the world, either. And I'm pretty confident a UK made hair straightener could be profitably sold for £399 or less.
None of this really makes me happy that someone can't make hair straighteners, regardless of cost or the fact Dyson is a bit annoying being very much a salesman in engineer's clothing (as the publicity he's generating off the back of this shows.).
But he’s the one that bleats to the media.
Is one line saying got some supply problems but working to overcome them “bleating”. I’m not his no1 fan - but I haven’t seen him being daft enough to complain.
Anyway. I'm with the OP on this one.
Economic changes caused by coronavirus will self-correct demand for £400 hair straighteners, so Dyson needn't worry about not having enough to satisfy it.
Meanwhile, back in the real world........................we all love new stuff so long as its cheap and we can buy it for next day delivery via the internet 🙂
Oh, and we would all love to be weathy.
Well if poopscoop thinks that moving his operation over to the far east where over 90% of his business is located is a bad move then that will explain why Dyson is a successful multi-millionaire self made man and he isn't. Dyson is still a UK business, still pays ALOT of tax in the UK and still employs thousands of people in the UK. Why let jelousy and spite get in the way of a great british success? Dyson himself paid something like £150m in tax last year - which pays for a hell of a lot of nurses to cope with the coronovirus - not sure why dragging up his tax bill from 2006 is relevant in any way - was probably his fair share tax bill anyway...so James Dyson pays his taxes...not exactly a big news story and he remains one of the UK's biggest tax payers.
But as has already been said...meanwhile in the real world every business and everybody is having to deal with the fall out of coronavirus - no country or business will be immune, its a global pandemic just in case you've not been keeping up with developments over the last few days, so not something that is just affecting the Asia Pacific region, so nobody should shedding a tear for James Dyson...i'm sure he wouldn't want anyone to anyway.
Gloat over the rich businessman all you like. I'm pretty sure he'll have the last laugh. He'll look after his employees, his business will survive. His fortune will remain intact. He'll continue to pay his taxes. His premium domestic products will be in high demand after coronavirus.

Edit:

Apparently Sir James is worth $6.5 Billion USD (£5 Billion quid) not sure what he was worth back in 2004 TBF...
But sure, I'm super grateful he deigned to chuck some pocket change HMRCs way as he swanned off to Singapore, and I wish him all the best in his endeavours to flog overpriced consumer goods (constructed at the lowest possible cost overseas) back to the country he abandoned...
self made man
Incidentally when is he paying back the £5m Dyson got for R&D into leccy cars?
Is this the same Jimmy D that promised to make electric cars and then abandoned the project?
Oh bless. Never mind hey.
