No, not this one.  I love it now I found the # function to retrace my steps.

I mean newspaper websites.

Prompted by the Express/Mirror get-together, who have found their daily physical circulation drop from 16m to less than 2million.

So, surely the answer is to encourage web readership?  And indeed I subscribe to either the Independent or The Guardian/Observer (although I'm a bit pissed off and puzzled that The Guardian has stopped supporting Android - I suppose they think all their subscribers are Apple fanbois).

But as a proud Aston Villa fan, I (would) like to look at the daily news and rumours in the Birmingham Mail.  But it's unbearable.  As soon as you go on the site it's like playing sodding whack-a-mole trying to close off all the adverts and videos that start playing.  Sometimes there are two blasting through the speakers at the same time, and before you can get to them - Whoosh! up comes a full page ad (normally for a betting company) that seems to be impossible close without going to the page that invites you to get 10 free bets for ONLY £4.99!

I struggle to see how this benefits anybody.  As far as I can see there's no way to subscribe to an ad-free version.  As a result I now just go onto the NewsNow Aston Villa page and read the teaser headlines and try to make out what's going on from them.  And it's not just Birmingham Mail; nearly every local news site or football fan site seems to do the same.

Is it just me getting old?

I get lots of emails with links to these.

Apparently it's quite common in men my age.

This most definitely on their site, possibly the worst I've used for years. Was following a link to local pub recommendations in Brum (as an ex-Brummie I'd not been there for a while & wanted to see what they're like these days) but couldn't believe how unusable the local paper's website is.

They need the money.... if the output is the same and the income has dropped they need a hell of a lot of ad revenue and the jumpy flashy shouty ones pay best.

As for the Guardian reads fine on my phone, don't really need an app for a newspaper - mostly just a waste of space on a phone anyway, unless it's using the apple ads bit to monetise the content for them.

The only people it benefits, temporarily, are the site owners. P*** too many readers off and they won't come back no matter what.

I tried one local newspaper site that I very, very rarely visit. I used two browsers, one with a certain extension, one without. The browser with the extension loaded the home page in around 15 seconds, the one without it, it took five minutes!

The underlying problem is that unlike with printed material the content owners (Birmingham Mail, local rag, STW) don't have an authoritative say in what adverts appear, it's down to the advertisers.  It should be: "static ads only, no animated gifs or videos, no auto-play adverts. A fine of £1000 for every transgression", advertisers need to get their house in order.

Some sites seem to get the balance of advertising wrong. Must be difficult to get right when it’s all that pays the bills.

Though in fairness the Audi reviews are very thorough #niceplacetobe.

@shermer75 - not exactly mobile friendly is it! Was supposed to be sorted in 2017… need to drop the "busy" excuses and pull my finger out…

edit : just noticed the page hadn't finished loading in your screen shot… when it has there's a fudge that resizes elements to fix some overlapping content.

I was born within earshot of Villa Park.  It's not a choice.  Obviously :o)

Evans mobile site is awful. Takes ages to do anything.
