The downpipe from our front gutter is not draining, or not draining fast enough in any sort of downpour. I've popped my home pressure washers drain cleaning attachment down the pipe (at the bottom), with no useful outcome, other than splashing myself, with dank water. House was built in the 60/70's so the water seemingly goes into the main drains (or did at the rear), not a soak away? Seemingly dyno-rod time... are they any good or all marketing?
Check the top is not blocked?
You can get drain rods form screw fix for a reasonable price.

I've pulled the drain pipe out of the ground (and splashed myself with the content of the downpipe)

I don't know where the drain runs to, the original builders concreted the plastic pipe into the underground drain, but shoving a stick down it, it seems packed pretty solid
You can get a drain cleaning hose for a pressure washer
It's likely you have an interceptor manhole near your front boundary. The cover to this may be in your drive, in your path or may be covered in your front garden. If you can find it and lift the cover carefully, you may find a branch in the manhole going to the down pipe. Try and clear any dirt and debris from the frame and cover to avoid dropping it into the chamber.
Try and clear the blockage from that end with either rods, hose or jet wash.
Good luck.
oh interesting, if we have one it's hidden under the front garden. Metal detector time? Is there any chance this would go under the house, to join the main run at the rear, as there definitely a manhole there. There is a single road drain on my side of the road, about 50m away from my house.
@tagnut69, been there, it didn't do anything...

Is your property detached or semi? If so it's likely it has a run along the side of the house that runs to the main at the rear. Metal detector time = fun.

semi, maybe time for one of those amazon endoscope camera's then (or let dyno-rod do it), as the rear manhole is in the middle at the rear of the house. No sign of any drain cover down the side of mine, or any of the neighbours houses.
I'm my humble opinion, and experience, I would be using a less well-know, local business. Wink wink.
Sounds like the pipe is packed with crap falling down the pipe. Partner's house has a downpipe with a curve at the bottom and I need to clear it yearly otherwise the crap that falls down the pipe (roughcast chips from the chimney, moss and whatever vegetation from the birds nests)...so I stick the house up the bottom and go full force...it flushes the crap around and then empties it all.
I reckon a drain cleaning kit from Screwfix and you could clear the blockage and it would flow clear once again.
I routinely clear the drains on our farm
When I get stuck, I google search a local independent drain specialist, and have always found them to be friendly and cheaper than Dyno Rod and they have ALL the tools in their van
The job is usually done in less than 90 minutes after I have spent (wasted) most of a day trying to resolve it myself
However, if it is becoming a regular issue for you, and you enjoy Do It Yourself, then it would be worth splashing out on some of the kit
If you do decide to get someone in I would recommend this service which will connect you to local businesses who will quote for the work beforehand & available dates.
They were excellent for me & the pricing was refreshingly low.
All the detached houses on my street share a waste pipe, which runs down the boundary. I have to clear out the drains every few months, I got some gloves that go to your elbow and get my arm down there, pretty smelly but got to be done.
I actually jetwashed my gutters the other day, it's a bungalow so easy, and loads of stuff came out, it's a build up of moss I think.
Just had to get a blocked rainwater drain jetted for work. Dyno rod quoted £170, local company did it for £142. They were there same day for 30 mins tops, cleared it out with their water jet thing that pushes itself through the drain, all done.
Excellent, many thanks, I know if been blocked a while, but it was never high on my priorities, but since I had new guttering it's annoying listening to it overflow (from the guttering, luckily away from the building, so no damp issues)
I will try a local trades man, but will talk to one (still) original neighbours, and see if they have any info.
