Had what I thought was a calf strain after asking gp for some pin killers but he insisted on sending me for a ultra sound which showed a dvt in a vein in my calf, been put on blood thinners for 3 months to disperse the clot. Anyone else has this? Was wondering when I can get back down the gym and more importantly get out on the bike? Calf feels ok now just a bit of a dull ache

yes, i had one 18 month ago after having a hip replacement. i was doing abit of cycling and felt a pain in my ankle. thought it was a pull. but over a couple of days it moved up through my calf and to the back of my knee.
i knew what it was, so went to see the hospital. they gave me a injection to break it up, and put me on hepatin injections for a few weeks which i had to do myself.

i didnt stop cycling at all. just took it a bit easier.

i think once the drugs are in then they start breaking it up. i just used a bit of common, and didnt do anything too hard or serious.
you dont want to be falling off and banging yourself up when you are on blood thinners.

good luck with it.

I thought it was pretty obvious if you have dvt.. ie the leg is swollen and red and often warm to touch. Were there no obvious changes in appearance of your leg before it was diagnosed?

A cycling buddy had this, his broke up and a bit lodged in his lung killing off 1/3 of a lung. He was on Warfin for months as a result (over a year IIRC). Didn't really affect his cycling, his body just adapted and upped his haemocrit to accommodate for the fact he only had 5/6s of his lungs working.....

I had a suspected DVT a few years ago, mine did turn out to be a calf strain. Remember sitting in the hospital for a few hours with a doctor coming in every half hour measuring around the calf to see if was swelling.

Out of interest have you had the vaccine, if so when? Could be related.

Yes, I am going through the same thing as you, OP. DVT in left calf. Am now 4 weeks in - first 3 weeks on 15mg Rivaroxaban twice daily, then moved on to 20mg once per day for 9 weeks.

I have been getting out on the bike every now and again, as well as throwing in the odd Zwift ride. My doctor was quite clear that cycling was fine (including mountain biking) provided that I took care and rode well within myself - no 417 for me! (I'm in Cheltenham.) I had a nice morning on and around the family trail at FOD a couple of weeks ago, and I'm heading out on the road bike every now and again.

I've invested in a Ride-id bracelet, just in case, but otherwise am just being slightly more careful than usual. Crashing would be a very bad idea at the moment, and my crashes have historically been due to personal failings rather than third parties.

I'm currently trying to get in front of a haematologist so that it can be established whether my DVT is linked to a broken leg from a couple of years ago, or whether there's something else up. This will determine whether I need to stay on the meds beyond the initial 12 weeks.

Two easy things I was told to do were to avoid sitting around all day and to make sure I stayed hydrated. I also actually read the leaflet that came with the medication - first time for everything - and it was surprisingly useful!

And, before you ask, no, I've not had any Covid vaccine!

Had the same here. Operation in left leg which lead to reduced mobility. Developed a hot and swollen calf so went to hospital. Sent home to keep an eye on it. A&E following day with scan confirmed a DVT in my left calf. Completed a course of Rivaroxaban (forgot the timeframe and dosage). Was self injected which I dispised! 6/7 years down the line with no further issues. No longer on the thinners and no aches or pains. Had another operation on that leg for a nasty break too. Flown loads since also and just wear flight compression socks as a precaution. Shit myself at the time hearing I had one. Being 23, very fit and active it came as a huge shock. Just maintain an active lifestyle as others have said, I would imagine is the best approach.

Edit
I was called up for my first Covid vaccine under the vulnerable catagory as well. Apparently, the nurse informed me that a DVT will stay on your record as a cardiovascular disorder. This was after me quizzing as to why I was called up considering my only medical problem is that I'm a clumsy bugger and break loads of bones!

I had one in the back of my knee for no apparent reason. My leg had swollen up which i just thought was an insect bite....... Heparin injections over three days the ultrasound and a full body CAT scan then 10mg rivoroxiban for the rest of my life as they couldn't find any reason for the clot in the first place.
Hospital advised me to carry on with life as normal re exercise etc.

I'm not sure that the thinners are used to disperse the clot.
When I was diagnosed with mine they kept me in hospital and tested me every day until my blood tests showed that it was clear. I was told the body gets rid of the clot on its own but the danger is that a bit breaks away and gets stuck in the lung, heart or brain causing a mild case of death.
I'd been in a full length leg plaster for 3 months following a nasty spiral fracture and it seems I'd grown an impressive full length black pudding in the meantime.
The 6 months of warfarin was, it seems, a precaution to ensure it didn't come back. The result of the DVT was that the valves in my vein got crushed, never to recover so I now wear a knee length compression stocking (NHS prescription) when I'm wearing trousers. I think I've got Post Thrombotic Syndrome, but that's due to the extreme length of time I had it prior to diagnosis - most people recover completely I think.
It didn't (and doesn't) have an effect on my riding - because I wasn't allowed to get on a bike until my leg was properly glued back together. I wear shorts and cycle and windsurf without the stocking but on holidays in hot countries I'm the cool dude wearing jeans at night when everybody is looking distinctly uncool in shorts. Because I've got my stocking on.
It's been 24 years and has never had a negative effect on me.

I had a PE in Dec ‘13 following a flight. Had an unprovoked thigh clot in March ‘18. Turns out I’m likely to have an autoimmune condition and am on Rivaroxaban for life (10mg). I live life normally and have not changed how/what I ride. I do find a feel the cold more now - the only obvious side effect for me

@footflaps yeah I was a bit ?? About the maths teacher point.

1/3 of 1 lung is 1/6 of a pair. So 5/6 still fine of the pair or 2/3 of the damaged one.

Let's leave aside that your lungs aren't the same size.
