It’s time for a new duvet, have come to the conclusion that we don’t want a down duvet as it’s cruel to the ducks and geese. Don’t want recycled duvet from plastics etc as sleeping next to plastic doesn’t feel me with joy, same goes for non recycled microfibre duvets.
Options are wool which seem to tick all the boxes with being environmentally friendly and no animals being plucked.
There are bamboo duvets though I don’t know anything about them.
Has anyone used/have a woollen duvet ?
This is looking like the best option so far.
Yep, warm and not sweaty like a synthetic one. Recommended.
We really like our wool duvet. It has an almost weighted feel which sits nicely on you but doesn't feel stifling.
Wool here, g/f just bought it, without me doing 3month of internet investigating... it's ace!
Really warm in winter, and cool in the summer, very impressed. My only 'con' is they seem to cool down quickly, when you pop to the loo.
I love our wool duvet (baavet). It's a nice weight, keeps me a comfortable temperature pretty much all the time bar the height of summer and doesn't seem to cause the horrible clammy feeling down/synthetic do.
I have a Baavet too. I went for the midweight from memory so I have a topper in winter. Probably not as "luxurious" feeling as a down duvet, feels more like a big blanket, but I like it.
I just bought baavet pillows which I'm not as impressed with - they're a bit too hard / lumpy. Sticking with them for now but on the lookout for something feathered.
Nearly a year with a wool duvet here and it is very nice. We have a king size duvet on a double bed so it feels weighted. Old stone house here so bedroom temperature only changes about 4 degrees max (18-22ish) in the year so it is year round. We chose the middle weight version. As said above feels more like a big blanket but you soon get used to it. I sleep very well with it, much better than down.
Must be duvets made with recycled plastic insulation? Lots of outdoor clothing using it now instead of down.
Yes ... wool duvet from Devon Duvets. Comfortable all year round. Wouldn't switch now.
I've had a wool duvet for years now, stays on year round unless there's a heatwave.
You can buy silk-filled duvets. I have no idea if they're any good, but they exist.
The ethics of down are complicated. Mostly it's a by-product of birds bred for slaughter, so it's going to exist whether you buy it or not, but the conditions birds are kept in are variable and had to monitor. I suspect outdoor brands are better at this than bedding ones tbh, but even then it's a difficult process, see the Mountain Equipment Down Codex site if you're interested:

me & wife have Baavet medium weight on our bed. Big son has Woolroom medium weight on his bed.
They're approximately the same price (about £5 diff IIRC?). Both are great , won't be going back to synthetic because they can feel clammy/sweaty, and won't be going back to down-filled because they're too light in weight, just not cozy enough; as someone above says, my wool duvet is almost verging on 'weighted-blanket' in a good way.
I can confirm the Baavet one was still nice to be under even at the height of covid feverish night sweats a couple of weeks ago.
We are fully woool, pillows, quilt and mattress all from. https://www.thewoolroom.com/
I would highly recommend it….
Another Baavet here, absolutely love it! We got ours from the bargain bin as a returned second. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Feels lovely and cosy all year round, a nice weight somewhere between down duvet and traditional wool blanket.
When it was brand new it had a sheepy aroma which I really liked, it wore off after a week or two though
Madame Kormoran has a wool pillow too, i'm not allowed near it but can confirm it is considered 'very nice'
Baavet user here for the past 5 years.
We have summer and winter versions out of the bargain bin (nothing wrong with them) and they've been brilliant.
@highpeakrider and mattress expperts in general

which mattress did you go for? The psring count (and hence price) varies enormously. They do currently have 20% off and have some stuff in stock ready to go though, so am tempted as we've been thinking about getting a new (wool) mattress for a while.
i think we got the one below but if you can i would visit a shop as you can order different spring strengths.

Cheers. that's what I hd my eye on - might have to go down to Darley Dale and check it out
We love our alpaca duvet. It's magically warm enough for the coldest winter and cool enough for the height of summer.
We love our alpaca duvet
Peak STW again!
For both wool duvets and pillows, do they smell?
I've been wool pillow curious. Do you have to fluff them up a lot (ie do they get compacted easily) or do they retain their shape?

We got a classic medium duvet from thewoolroom and it had a sheep dip smell when first opened, it then had a faint smell for a couple of weeks and since then nothing. They advise leaving the duvet out for a night or two before using. The reviews suggested that the higher price deluxe versions did not have the same issue.
The duvets retain shape very well and do not move around in the duvet cover at all. No idea about pillows yet
I used to boil-in-the-bed with man-made fibres, sometimes with down, never with a wool duvet. Seems to maintain a constant temperate environment.
We have Baavet pillows and you do need to fluff then regularly, they clump up
I've just replaced my wool pillows as they had become a bit lumpy after many years of use. I've replaced them with the new version of the same pillows – that's how much I liked them – but the new ones have a zip so I guess I'll be able to rummage around inside and sort out any lumps. Also allows you to take some stuffing out if you want them a bit lower.
Slight smell for both duvet and pillows but I didn't find it off-putting, and it wore off pretty quickly.
but the new ones have a zip
we gfot 2 pillows and a spare zipped case so that we can occasionally swap all the wool into a clean case then wash the now-empty case.
Link to those pillows please.
Not sure if you meant the Baavet ones or the ones I mentioned, but here's the link to the Devon Duvets pillows page – I got the original ones:

you can even buy extra wool to put in if you want a really firm pillow
Darley Dale has a shop and outlet store, very helpful when we went.

Off the back of this thread I just bought a winter king size from the Wool Room. Online code "COSY20"gave 20% off so cheaper than the alternatives. Appreciate they're made in Lithuania rather than the UK, but at 33% cheaper than the alternative I'll take it.
Darley Dale shop is only down the road from me but figured I wouldn't be able to get the 20% off plus it will be delivered tomorrow so that will be sooner than I'd be able to get down to Darley Dale.
highpeakrider - thanks so much for your recommendations.
We visited the shop and purchased a wool duvet and fab mattress. Mattress was delivered with care yesterday. Had a great nights sleep.
The shop assistant was very good in giving some extra discount off the duvet as we'd missed the deadline by one day.
It was an expensive day out, but worth every penny imo.
The outlet shop is good too. I got a 'moon wool' throw for a fraction of the price, just because of 'flaws that I couldn't spot.
'
Glad you like it, we only went for a look and ended up buying everything.
