Hello all... tried google but this is a STW knowledge answer.. 😊

Currently on holiday in the Dominican Republic and sat here drinking some dam good rum. We fly home with aireuropa via Madrid to London. If I buy a few bottles (hand luggage) at departure in Dom Rep would it likely be confiscated in Madrid (4hr stop over and you pass through a new scanner etc)...what's the current EU rules ?

Thanks

The only experience of this I have is watching a VEEERRRRYYY irate lady having to dump what looked like a good few hundred pounds worth of duty-free bought Scotch whisky at Charles De Gaulle airport when going through security for a connecting flight to Bangkok. She just had them in normal carrier bags though. I think if you buy and get them sealed in a STEB (Security Tamper Evident Bag) with the receipt sealed inside the bag then you should be OK.

You are only allowed 1 litre duty free. No idea how strict they are though. Not sure about the 100ml limit. I've had to pour my drink away on stop overs before. Depends on the airport. Is it that much cheaper at the airport? Can't you buy it in town and put it in hold luggage or maybe buy some emergency miniatures just in case.

Unless they have high local taxes just buy local and put it in your case.

IANACO, but to be able to carry through an intermediate terminal like Madrid it will need to be in sealed duty free bag with receipt inside. This is providing you stay airside. Not sure if this is possible if you leave and have to come back through main security. UK duty free amounts will apply.

It's a liquid security issue rather than duty free taxes. According to here it should be OK, just make sure it's bagged as described in the link.

EU duty free limits apply when you're buying at the non-EU airport. From here, you can then carry unlimited amounts for your own use in the EU.

The rules are you can take it through in approved sealed bags. The reality is that I was made to check in my duty free when transiting at Madrid airport. My lack of Spanish didn't help the discussion with the lady at security.

I was quite surprised when it made it on to the baggage carousel at the end. I would have thought clear plastic bags full of booze would have quite a high attrition rate as hold luggage.
