One of my daughters is in rented accom. She appears to be over run with small mites that seem to be dust mites.

They seem to be all over her belongings like headphones/laptop etc and so i feel they must be in the soft furnishings and carpets too?

Does anyone know anything about them and how im going to get rid of them? She seems relly really stressed about them and its making her very upset.

Thanks

Ian

Dust mites are virtually invisible, and are pretty much everywhere, in every home no matter how clean. They are not a problem unless you are allergic to them. If not, your are not going to be aware of them.

If she can see them they might be something else. Possibly bed bugs? If so, they are going to be more of an issue than dust mites

Landlords responsibility and the landlord should provide compo and  alternative accommodation if the flat is unlivable

Not bed bugs?

One of my tenants brought bed bugs into my rental flat.  It was discovered when the next lot moved in

I replaced the bed, sofas and all soft furnishing, paid to have the flat bug bombed, the tenants had to be out for 3 days but fortunately had somewhere else to go so I didn't have pay for alternate accomodation.  Gave them 2 weeks off the rent to make up for it.

Bed bugs are tricky to get rid off hence replacing all the soft furnishings and bug bombing the flat.  It did get rid of them.

Spiders can go up your nose while you're sleeping 😉

That is easily resolved by blowing your nose. It's when spiders crawl into someone's ear that they can cause a problem. Especially if they lay their eggs there.

If they are absolutely tiny and don't jump then they could be book lice. They commonly live around damp plaster so are there any leaks, mould or lack of ventilation?

We had a few in bathrooms of a new build house which is very common whilst the plaster thoroughly dried out. Gone after a few months and never been back, so the solution is remove / fix the habitat they live in.

Ok, it seems like it may be bed bugs. The property is in Wales.

She doesnt seem to have been bitten. Its causing her a lot of stress when she can see these little creatures on surfaces like her desk and laptop.

Its causing her a lot of stress

I can well imagine how it's making her feel.

A few years ago we discovered Bird Mites in our loft - presumably from a bird that made a nest up there. They were everywhere - crawling all over our things and making their way into the bedrooms below via the light fittings etc...

The idea of them crawling all over our stuff and getting into our house actually drove my wife mad for a few months. We had a fumigation chap come and he set off a bomb of insecticide in the loft and my wife just cleaned and cleaned for weeks. She kept on finding them on the bedroom window sills for almost 6 months afterwards.

I feel your daughters pain :o(

If it's rented I wouldn't be tackling it myself, you're never going to get rid of them that easily and may well carry them back to your property.

What Stevet says

This is a landlord issue - read my link above and DIY stuff will be unlikely to get rid of them.  A professional has access to more powerful stuff.  when my rental flat was done no one could enter it for 48 hours afterwards and all soft furnishings had to be destroyed, all clothing thru a high temp wash or in a freezer for a week to kill the bugs.

Of course we do not know what type of bug it is but no way would I try to tackle it myself

Ok, it seems like it may be bed bugs.

I have never seen a bed bug in my life but I struggle to believe that they can be responsible for situations like this:

They seem to be all over her belongings like headphones/laptop etc

And if she doesn't seem to have been bitten what are they feeding on?

Bed bug infestations are getting much more prevalent Europe wide.    We do not know they are bed bugs but its the most likely IMO

Even if they haven't been spotted in a bed or any sort of soft furnishings?

Yes - but it could be other things for sure.

Due to the overcrowding and lack of suitable bed-space these are homeless bed-bugs. They will be trying to sell their version of Shelter to their kind.

Sure they're bed bugs? Seems weird for them to be crawling all over everything, bed bugs are normally very secretive and you'll only see them out at night, generally on the bed!

If there's enough of them to be visibly out and about, you possibly have a scary large infestation. Check under the mattress & bed.

They're dark red or brown, large ones can be lentil sized. We had them once... absolute nightmare to get rid of. They lay eggs which can survive and then hatch 2 weeks after you killed all the adults... Solution is to give everything (EVERYTHING) a hot wash and get the pros in to nuke the house (carpets, mattresses etc) with powerful stuff (or if you can get hold of one, an actual nuke). It needs something strong enough to remain and kill them as soon as any surviving eggs hatch.

If she's definitely not getting bitten, what are they eating? Bed bugs only eat blood. The bites are small and red and usually a few in a line, a couple of cm apart. I wasn't bothered by them and only rarely got bites but my wife reacted badly and apparently tastes better.

Anyway... we also had tiny white mites in the kitchen which fit your "crawling all over everything" description. Seems there are various types of these but in general they like food and damp. If you properly dry the room (dehumidifier?) and religiously get rid of any crumbs etc then they should disappear after a while.

Bed bugs were fixed after 2 visits from the pros and washing everything (seriously, everything) at 60.

White things were fixed by moving house 😁

Sure they’re bed bugs?

My suggestion and I am not at all sure - just that bed bugs seem to be approaching epidemic proportions right across europe

Pictures of the bugs would help greatly. Without identification it is difficult to know what the best approach is!
