.. a bike on your shoulders 😉
Thinking of starting at the Raise Cottages and heading up to Grisdale Tarn, then over Patterdale Common as astarter instead of up Great Tongue.
Anybody walked up this way carrying a bike, what's it like, any bits rideable (I know its cheeky) and how long roughly did it take?
Thanks
Carlos
Hi Carlos,
Not walked up it, but walked down it. It was the end of a long day, but as I remember it should be ride-able in places - defo not a problem to hike-a-bike it.
RM.
We've hike-a-biked up Tongue Gill footpath, further to the South/East of Great Tongue bridleway. It's a better surfaced path all the way to Grisedale Tarn and lower third maybe is just about ridable.
No idea re time, but can't have taken long as that was our second ascent in the day of Helvellyn and we had lunch at the top of Tongue Gill.
Route was... up from Glenridding; down Birk Side/Wythburn; up Tongue Gill & Dollywagon; down Sticks & Seldom Seen 🙂
yeah in 6ft segments inbetween shouldering your bike and walking/climbing up the rest of it 🙂but as I remember it should be ride-able in places
It's a very direct way of getting up there, it was a nice day, I'd already ridden some nice trails and had more to come, I didn't mind it, other opinions are available 🙂
Took 2 of us about an hour to get up to the tarn.
Ecky - Done both the legit bridleway and footpath up the Tongues and was looking for another option. Just for something different.
Looking on Bikehike its just over a 2km and 330m climbing so should be doable in 30 - 40 mins surely?
Planned route was Up to the Tarn, Paterdale Common, Boredale Hause, Glenridding, Kepple Cove, Helvellyn, Birkside
Good day out that, the hike a bike stuff will sting a bit but hey thats just part of the fun. Glenridding, Keppel cove should also smart a bit towards the top. Wish it was me.
Well everything went as planned. Took 35 mins to hike a bike up Dunmail Raise, it's a bit tech in places but easily doable in bike shoes and cleats. Wouldn't say any more than the first 200m or so and the last 350m were rideable though, or certainly not worth the effort (Donk your spot on with the 2-3m rideable sections on the way up). We opted for the left at the Tarn which spits you out on the very bottom bit of The Dollywagon, then carried on as originally plotted.
Next time we'd prob start in Glenrdding and add a bit more in on that side. Yesterday's ride came in at about 30km and 1700m. So easily doable and with 4, IMO, great descents.
