She came over from another country to live with me, and after giving her a couple of days to check what my feelings were, I had to tell her I'd met someone else since our last time together.

As you can imagine, apart from my new partner, no-one, not even my closest family and friends was on my side. Shit thing to do, but she's fine now, and my new girl left me eventually to move abroad (poetic justice?).

I got a text once:
"Sorry but this isn't working I'm splitting up with you"
Thought the best way to respond was:
"No bother"

She hasn't forgiven me 🙂

You tricked your ex into committing herself into an institution just so you could get rid! 👿

I applaud your Machiavellian genius!

I dont I've ever had a particularly catastrophic break up. Although they've been painful I've always understood it was defo the right thing to happen.

AND you ALWAYS get to ride your bike more. Which can only be good, no?

In bed with gf after a boozy night out. Her best mate (gagging for it btw) was in bed with us all laughing and joking. Anyway as one thing led to another, I reached over to the other girl, comfortably in the knowledge that if she was up for it with her mate not a foot away, then I obviously had the green light.
Oh how I was wrong.

Her waking up to the sound of me & a mutual friend going at it in the spare room. That kind of spelled the end really.

Why not? Carry on Rachel 🙂

My worst one? the last one, engaged and all that for 2yrs then when i asked her at the dinner table in a restaraunt with 6 friends when we were getting married, she replied...

"I don't want to get married".

Bitch.

I dont like hurting people (and am also a coward for confrontation) so if i want to split up with someone i try to engineer it that they are the ones doing the dumping. One girl didnt take the months of hints...so i pretended to join the foreign legion, moved back home to my parents in Scotland and just stopped all contact overnight.

Rachel - I ended up outside B&Q with a rope in my hands that i'd apparently bought, in tears with no real idea of how i'd got there (which seeing as my bike was with me was rather scary).

Not a good time TBH.

There's no such thing as a right way to dump someone - someone always gets hurt but there are some real car crashes here...

Can't really go into it in much detail here, but my worst one was a rather public breakup. I alienated a load of folk in the local mtb community (not proud of), went through therapy for depression, and ruined a subsequent relationship. Thankfully, for the most part, now water under the bridge.

Got dumped by my then girlfriend on my 30th birthday. To be fair to her, she had said she'd make it a birthday I'd never forget.

I dumped my first girlfriend after I'd decided things weren't working out and I wanted to get out. Went to her house, explained the situation, and said quite clearly "Things aren't working, and I want us to break up" queue loads of tears, "This is the worst day of my life, I have nothing left to live for" type stuff was said (by her) and I did the manly thing and legged it.
A couple of weeks later, no contact between us, and she appears outside mine and says "I don't think things are really working for us, we never seem to see each other any more" It felt really cruel to have to explain for a 2nd time.... 😕

LOL @ this thread.

Not really 'dumping' but my 1st wife and I weren't getting on and I decided I was going to Spain for a while to work. At the last minute she came along and on the first day there we decided to split up. Had a very strange but fun 'honeymoon' type 2 weeks and then she went home......alone.

I had a cracking summer 😆

Wow, sounds familiar! 😕

Only ever dumped 2 girls myself, the first one was quite comedy. Was in my last year at uni having only been dumped by my long term GF about 8 weeks prior, and met this girl. Went on a couple of dates, ended up back at her house in bed. Anyway, not much happened, I was being a gentleman and the tears started flowing with her... Turned out she was a virgin and was embarrassed! Anyway, no problem... Calmed her down, started talking about things, and she could see what I nice guy I was... So much so, that within 30 minutes of me having stopped her from crying, she had turned around and told me what she wanted to name "our kids"!!!

I got dressed... Quickly.

I RAN LIKE F@@K!

Spent the last 2 terms of uni avoiding her like the plague...

I'd actually say *best* way in this case, as I'm a big music/song lyrics geek, but an old girlfriend simply sent me the lyrics to Ani di Franco's "Used to You" (look it up) with a note saying "This is how I feel. Goodbye"

Worst was just being lied to - "It's not you, we've just grown apart, you've got things to do that don't involve me etc etc" when actually she'd got it together with a guy from her uni halls a couple of weeks before and didn't want to tell me. Things were a damn sight easier when she just told me the truth.

They generally are!

"Sorry, I've found someone else" actually takes a lot less time to get over and move on from than "it's not you, it's me"...

last time i was dumped, well, suffered psychological abuse for about 6 months, lived on my nerves, lost all my confidence, lost 2.5stone (probably did me a favour there...) and that *beep*beep* wanted to be friends...........

looking back i cant believe i put up with it, talk about dodging a bullet.

and no, we aren't friends 🙂

I'd been seeing a girl who was way too clingy just before I went out to the 1st Gulf war. Whilst I was out there talking to a mate that I need to get rid of her as she would wait outside my house for me to get back from a night out no matter what the weather was and clearly a touch mental. He said to give him her name and address and I'll sort it and like an idiot I did.
Returning from the Gulf she was more than a little surprised to find out I was still alive, as was I that I had died. I spent the rest of that leave avoiding her family and especially her sisters who had attacked me in the middle of the supermarket.
My mate found it all very amusing when I caught up with him.

Right then. I'd been seeing a very nice lass at uni for a few weeks, quite the gymnast I seem to remember when I spotted another lass. Anyway, I dumped the first one for the second one and very soon realised that she was not quite the gymnast and really not that keen in the bedroom department unlike the first lass. Anyway, the first lass was making signs of recovery so we hooked up with each other again. In the meantime the second lass had been following my movements. I thought I'd been careful but apparently not, someone must have told on me in hindsight. There was an awkward confrontation at the front door where I exclaimed to a tearful second lass that it was alright as I had not slept with the first lass. I had....twice, that night/morning. Second lasses parting shot was 'I hope you have a nice Christmas'. I did feel quite bad and as I type this I'm feeling guilty all over again, she was a very nice girl but at the age of 19 I was more interested in the talented and very, very keen gymnast.

Sorry Liz, I was a git.

Dumped an old gf at her 21st party.. Had been seeing each other about 8 months.. Was at her parents house about ten miles outside of Edinburgh, at three in the morning. Didn't want to ruin the night for her, but had made up my mind it was over. I even bought and gave her a reasonably expensive mobile (student at the time), so when we went to bed and she obviously wanted another pressie I split up with her because on principle, I wouldn't sleep with her.
Had to walk home to Tollcross, in the rain. At three in the morning. All my other friends were at a night out in Dundee.
It's amazing how unpopular hitch hikers are around Edinburgh and it's environs..
Stabbing tho? Really? I don't want to want to know anything more!

What principle is this? I have no moral compass and need frequent re-directing 😈

But I do agree with Rachel as I am also a creep 😉

I'd been with this girl I'd known for a very long time and she was absolutely set on us getting married and having kids. The trouble was, she was an absolute train wreck and I didn't want kids at the time. She just assumed that "things would be alright" when I asked her where the money was going to come from for a mortgage etc. Anyway, over the months she put constant pressure on me to submit and impregnate her and when I stood my ground, she started turning up at my friends' doorsteps, bursting into tears and talking about children. I had various "friends" sit me down and demand that I do the right thing by this poor girl, get married and have babies, immediately.

When she started turning up at my brother's house dropping hints that she'd forgotten to take her contraceptive pill I finished it.

It was the hardest thing I've ever done, she was a lovely girl but was utterly toxic.

Another one had to be told four times that the relationship was over and that I didn't want us to see each other anymore. She just kept turning up at my house every Friday night, despite the fact that I eventually got tired and slept on the sofa every time it was as if she just didn't hear me each and every time. Nice girl, but in retrospect it would have been less mad had I actually dated a box of beards.

Not so much a dumping as a 'no we aren't back together'. Had sex with an ex outside a local nightclub when I was about 19 - the Pav for those that know Matlock back in the day.

Did the deed, don't know if I satisfied her (probably not), zipped up and said..... 'thanks' and walked away. Much ranting from her ensued as I walked back to my mates and regaled the events to high 5's all round.

I'm not proud...

ATg and supertramp, had a kinda weird code, and still do.
The same mental moral compass meant that it was ok to ignore her calls (from the mobile I gave her) over the next couple of weeks, but when she called from a friend of hers' phone whose number I didn't recognise, I then had to sit and listen to her verbally abuse me for an best part of 40 mins.
Tanned a bottle of vodka and some red wine that night, luckily my friends pulled me semi conscious from a hedge a few hours later. ****.
But hey, we were all young once!

I was pretty sure we had finished our relationship and was therefore somewhat surprised to be doorstepped by my Australian (ex-)gf when i was living in France. Last I saw her was a tearful au revoir at Melbourne airport. Sadly for all involved my erm Danish friend answered the door in her knickers and bra (and to be clear she was female). That sort of indicated that possibly her trip may have been somewhat presumptious. She smashed a van up in rage which was nice as it was parked in my space - mine was at work ! Had to be sneaked past her at the bus station in the boot of a car. She let my tyres down about a year later when i was back in NZ. Nutjob.

That is how she found out.

Blimey usual spectrum of experiences, some proper tools.

Nothing too crazy here, worst was probably a text when I was flying home from a big trip, she preferred to have lunch with mates rather than see me on my return. She works in my office now, we get on fine.

Out of interest, are folk generally on good terms with or even friends with ex's?

Oh and is this allthegear coming out? CHapeau

A sad story about the unfortunate result of being dumped. Not me fortunatly but i was involved i guess, anyway years ago whilst travelling in Oz with two blokes I met one of them was sent a dear John by a girl he had proposed to and was head over heels in love with. He was crushed and we decided to go for a canoe trip down Catherine Gorge. After a short while the guy started fitting and fell out of the canoe....he drowned.

Turns out that he was epilleptic and the upset and stressfrom being dumped had brought the fit on...at least that was the coroners verdict....all very sad.

We actually bumped into the girl who sent the letter a few months later, she was still travelling around with a friend and had the unpleasent job of telling her what had happened, i felt really bad for her she was very upset and guilt riden. 😥
