The sensors on the one at the front of the house have gone pop, cos once it comes on it doesn't go off. So, it needs replacing.

Thing is, it's in a very exposed spot, so needs a good level of sealing out of the elements, and I'm wary of just doing an eBay lucky dip as I don't hugely trust when any of the say 'IP65 rated'. So, any particular recommendations?

Screwfix's latest 20 quid 20watt led job doing it for me currently. Far better units than the old ones.

-ive got 4 of them covering various areas.

I tried the eBay jobs once. 50% Dead on arrival and had to fight with them to get a refund.....blaming anything other than shit quality lights wanting an electricians report etc. - PayPal sorted them.

Look for the ones with the factory metal glanded wires. The previous gen (now discounted) has ones you take your flex in through a really shitty plastic gland with poor sealing that filled with water when mounted as directed.

Screwfix took the old water filled ones back no bother - I believe they had a recall on them

Just checked (as I'm bored Ill)
BrackenHeath are the ones. Talking about.

Avoid the weyburn. - says pre terminated but when you look at the photos it clearly shows a gland nut on the back to terminate your own flex - the gland nut top faces up which lets the water run down the cable and pool on top.

As above. No actual recall. We just warrenty them, refund and replace with the newer ones. Which can cause a few problems as they are not identical and this is an issue apparently
As an aside, we often get asked for pir lamps with manual overrides or timer functionality so they can be on permanently for a few hours then switch into ir sensor mode.
We dont do them. If they exist.

I've got a couple of 10w Collingwood ones off of Screwfix on my garage. Bought the first one and was impressed enough with the build quality for the money to get a second for around the corner.

As someone said the general quality of these has improved over the years.

The Collingwood ones do have a manual override BTW, you just switch the power on and off to them via a switch a couples times for them to stay on.

An extremely timely thread, thank you @IHN and others who've replied to him.
Only last night I placed an order at Screwfix for one of the Weyburn lights; I've just added a new order for a Brackenheath instead, and will collect later today.

I can at least confirm that the Brackenheath ones come with approx 18" of 3-core ready connected via the steel-nutted gland on the rear. Certainly the 20W one I've just picked up does, at any rate. It feels like a solid piece of kit out of the box, albeit not fitted it yet.

Bit of a lottery with external lights, ime they’ll either die an early death or last for years.  Saying that Collingwood are a very good shout, I’ve fitted hundreds (probably thousands) of their lights in the last few years, get a low failure rate. Had good experience with Brackenheath, but only fitted a hand full so can’t really take much from that

Don't buy them from Lidl/Aldi. That is the best recommendation I can give. Will be trying some of the suggestions above to see if I can get more than a couple of months out of them on a welsh hillside

Ive got 3 of the Lap Wayburn pir lights from Screwfix

https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-weyburn-outdoor-led-floodlight-with-pir-sensor-black-10w-1000lm/433pg

Had them for around 4 years now and they get used a lot in 2 high traffic areas, only issue ive ever had was around one and a half years ago when one of the led panels died, took it back to Screwfix and they swapped it over straight away for a new light as they come with 3 years warranty

I've been using some steinel floodlights. Expensive, but I think they have a 5yr guarantee? Seem to be working ok after a few years of Manchester weather. There is probably an updated model to the pair I bought? They have lasted longer than previous led flood lights that I'd bought but they did cost 3.5 times the cost of previous lights they replaced.
