... He didn't want us to know in case we panicked. Us normal people, you know, we can't handle stuff like this.

Tbh, I'd not have been too fussed as I'd have guessed they would have found an ICU bed for him at a push.

Disclaimer: I'm a converted/rabid Republican these days.

BBC royal correspondent, Jonny Dymond, said Prince William's condition may not have been revealed publicly at the time as they may have wanted to avoid further alarm, given the national mood

More likely they didn't want anyone asking the awkward question his dad was getting about how he qualified for a test when most of the public didn't at the time.

Poopscop - I'd be signing up for your convertion process if it didn't mean we were likely to end up with a Head of State elected on popularity not policy.

That really is wonderfully both out of touch and patronizing. When can we stop paying for them?

As a supporter of some form of symbolic monarchy rather than the shitshow of a Presidential type head of state, I couldn't give a shit.

I note the only people giving said shit are the republicans.

And obviously the BBC who put the story about and anyone who clicked on it, people who reply to this thread or people who couldn’t understand how someone who is supposedly our next monarch could disregard the Covid restrictions, when infected, and get a free pass on it. Presumably his granny will give him another medal now. And his uncle’s a nonce
I always think it’s quite good that people are prepared to challenge something as ridiculous as a monarchy but some people like to bow and scrape to their betters - each to his/her ow.

Yep, to look up at them is to look down on yourself. He didn't catch it helping out at food banks did he?

If by "people" you meant me, did you actually read my post?

As I see it we have an ungodly hybrid of a monarchy that offers no moral guidance to its surfs (let alone express an opinion while its government had been effectively usurped), whilst owning huge swathes of OUR land, funded by us and cannot be unelected.... because they happened to have fallen out of the correct vagina.

Yeah, very symbolic for all the wrong reasons.

I don’t think the Royal family use the NHS so like the public it can be paid for privately.

It is a somewhat bizarre argument that gets trotted out in support of the monarchy that for some reason rarely gets questioned.

If the head of state is only symbolic, then why replace it with an elected president? Is there some magical rule that says there must be a head of state. If by twist of British law there must be a head of state, then make the citizens of the united kingdom the head of state.

WGAF if some privileged multi-millionaire who would have had access to the finest health care (a la Trump) got Covid?!

Honestly, so out of touch...

Sooner they are gone the better!

this is a royal dead cat, there's probably a banards castle story in the offing at one of the tabloids. this is laying the ground work to side step it.

Begs the question, what happened to his old 12 year old girlfriend?

As a supporter of some form of symbolic monarchy rather than the shitshow of a Presidential type head of state, I couldn’t give a shit.

See I thought that. Good for tourism, probably. Some form of moral example for the masses. Etc.

But then, the symbolic monarchy seem to have been used rather a lot as a symbol by the Brexiteers. The Randy Andy Epstein circus, any moral examples there? For Boris Johnson, maybe. Charles arranged marriage? Fabulous. And where's the Queen during these times of King Dom running down the country?

Get rid, I say. Revoke their exalted untouchable status. Clean up the act, arrest the ones who need arresting. Keep the palaces to do guided tours for tourists.

The sky will not fall in, we won't lose billions in tourist revenue, the government will carry on working just fine, but we won't have to put up with an archaic vestige of a long-gone feudal system that has long since served its purpose.

I am sure they are all lovely people but they don't deserve to be funded by the taxpayer any more than anyone else.

It’s been made public for pr purposes as in a no one is immune perspective. More likely to avoid awkward questions around why he got tested, how given how protected they are he got it when we were all under very strict lockdown, and who converted it up

With regards to the “keep them for the tourism” argument, we should look to France. The Palace of Versailles is their most visited tourist attraction.

Get rid of them imo. Turn “their” land into public parks.

Probably kept it quiet as if the queen, prince charles, and wiliiam had died, the prince regent would have been...... prince andrew! (as Harry has given up royal duties)

I think Harry would pop back into the fold in those circumstances! You'd think Anne would get a look-in in this day and age, but I suppose they've not updated the legislation.

I think there is different legislation which covers who runs the shop if your monarch is a toddler. Whether the Crown Act amends this I don't know.

Personally I'm all for giving unfettered power to Prince George, and looking forward to State Haribo Banquets and Windsor Castle being turned into a giant laserquest centre.

I think there may have been an element of hyperbole in the original post, but I did notice early on that lots of media types were claiming to have had it. There were several news presenters, the sort of One Show programme presenters. The only ones I can remember for definite were on the Frankie Boyle show, where the assumption seemed to be that everybody had had it. (Frankie Boyle and Sarah Pascoe were talking about their ongoing problems.) I even had a conversation with my wife about whether their lifestyle exposed to them to it more than ours.

Is there something of a self-selection going on here though? Like, you'd hear about media types getting it because they're, well, media types. You're less likely to hear about my next door neighbour getting it (unless you coincidentally live next door but one).

If by twist of British law there must be a head of state, then make the citizens of the united kingdom the head of state.

Ridiculous idea. Can you imagine the size of the stamps?

Good for tourism? Open up the place and show the pictures and the goodies that we've paid for. French lead the way. Otherwise a respite centre for the terminally ill. Anything but this financial black hole.

Just pick a family each year like jury service, give them 250,000 for the year and make it the law that whatever job's etc are to be retained. Make all the land into public parks and plant loads of trees (would generate revenue). All the castles to be open year round.

This current set of royals are kinda thick really. That clip of William from back in April in public setting with no distancing and denying a cough as an indicator is just wilfully stupid. Also a 30 something covid patient with an appreciable reaction should be talked about to help reinforce the message that this disease needs taking seriously.

@Drac - at the time when his daddy (and step-mum?) got tested (and presumably so did he) there was a UK shortage of testing. Testing was organised for his father by NHS Scotland and the former CMO for Scotland assured the nation that he met the clinical criteria for requiring a test.

Yep, to look up at them is to look down on yourself. He didn’t catch it helping out at food banks did he?

@BillMC - I'd have thought there was a reasonable chance he did catch it whilst participating in some sort of charitable engagement, albeit he probably wasn't packing tins of soup in carrier bags for more that it takes to get the photo opportunity that really helps the charity profile.
