I have a 9yr old Octavia VRS Estate, cows I’m such a stereotype STW’er, which has a DSG box. Whilst coming up to DSG oil change time, it seems to have developed a fault upon my return from FoD at the weekend, in as much as when it hits 5th under torque, it makes a racket from the passenger side front; but if a rattle if you like.
164k miles and smooth as silk until Saturday evening. It’s going to Skoda on Friday for its emissions recall but they’ll look at this that day too. Any initial thoughts or experiences to share?
I want to keep this car until it dies, as changing, to me, is pointless and costlier long term.
Ya.
Probably a failed bearing or the clutch for 1-3-5 gears is on it's way out. See what Skoda say but see a gearbox specialist too.
Read up on the problems after the emissions update before having it applied. You're above the mileage limit of 160k miles for the extended warranty. If everything else is running well I'd avoid it.
Thanks @craigxxl - Bearing failure doesn't sound too bad but I guess that it would have to be whipped out and that along with anything DSG, means its going to be expensive??
I wouldn't be thankful yet as Skoda will want to replace the gearbox at around £6k, a gearbox specialist could rebuild it but still around £1,500.
Car wouldn't be worth £6k so it would be a write off at that point.
£1500 is cheaper than a new one I suppose but it could be the start of further outlays so may be time to chop it in. Bugger
If it was me I'd forget the emission update, see a gearbox specialist and hope for the clutch to the problem, which will be the cheaper option. Looking at VAG forums it's around £600 through a dealer so a gearbox specialist would be cheaper and probably oil change at the same time. You'll probably get a few more years out of it then.
Yeah I see a number of negative stories following the emissions update. Small selection but the three people in my office had not noticed any change in performance or reliability; is it not the case of small minority shouting the loudest.
Either way, if the DSG needs work, Skoda will want more than i would justify spending and sell it.
Have a look on Briskoda, there are a lot more than a few being vocal. My brother's 2012 Octavia VRS estate with a lot less miles than yours was gutless and EGR problems after the fix. They refused to acknowledge that it was anything to do with the fix even though fine before it. Plenty of others on the Briskoda forum stating similar problems along with increases in DPF regens too.
Your choice but without the extended warranty cover that could be another £800 for a new EGR.
