A fairly complicated tooth extraction has left me with a dry socket…

Dentist has packed it with clove oil gauze which has now worn off… Oh my lord it’s painful! Please someone tell me it gets better and I might be able to sleep at some point in the future!
They didn’t even give me a sticker 🙁

I had that after a wisdom tooth extraction.

If it is that bad go back to the dentist and get more clove oil. Unless you can get some and add to the gauze yourself.

It does heal pretty quickly,  or did with me

Going to try and find a pipette to drip a little clove oil onto the gauze today. It certainly tickles a bit!

That sounds like the best option.

Was massively annoyed when the clot fell out of mine.  Then the dentist was snotty because I apparently didn't keep it clean enough.  Maybe I should have starved myself rather than eat for 3 days

You can get clove oil over the counter at a chemist. You can also take paracetamol for the pain.

If it's so painful that you can't sleep I'd give the dentist a call, my wisdom tooth extraction hurt but not that bad.

Simple options that should help-

warm salt water mouth rinse (teaspoon of salt dissolved in mug of hot water) rinsed and held over the area, 4-5 times a day.

Paracetamol can be very effective of taken regularly. Max dose is 2x500mg four times a day, DO NOT GO OVER max dose. If it doesn’t last you can add ibuprofen between (max 600mg three times a day) if you can take ibuprofen (beware stomach/gut issues and some sensitivities eg asthma sufferers)

corsodyl/chlorhexidine mouthwash may help but can stain if used longterm.

ice/cold water may help unless you have sensitivity.

avoid smoking/nicotine

clean the rest of your mouth as much as possible.

Dry socket will run it’s course in around a week, you may find some tiny bits of bone shed later.

if unsure contact your dentist for review/more dressing… antibiotics are not always indicated.

sorry you’ve had a bad time

Day 7 since extraction. Currently sat in bed with a bag of peas on my face trying to stop my gums hurting so much I’d happily jump out of the window to make it stop. This is crap

I feel your pain - literally. Had tooth out last Wednesday. First two days were ok but the pain got worse over the weekend. I went back to the dentist yesterday who said I had dry socket. It’s now 2am and I’m taking my second co-codamol which help me get some sleep. Miserable experience.

I had a bad wisdom tooth extraction when I was a student, it ripped a piece of bone out of my jaw, it hurt even when the anaesthetic was working. I got prescribed codeine, which my flatmates were quite fond of (it was much easier to get back then) so we all got happy for the afternoon on codeine and beer but then my jaw started hurting again. Paracetemol took care of it pretty well.
