Hi all,

Might try to spend a few hours in central London next Sunday, before taking my gf to Stansted airport (flight is at 6.30pm). Will be driving down from Derby.

When dad drives to London, he parks in Hendon, which is where we used to live, and gets the Northern line into town. Saves faff of driving into centre, and free parking too.

Would this be the best idea? Only concern is we will be limited for time,, getting the tube takes time of course, but still quicker than driving in I guess (even on a Sunday)?

How long do you have? Maybe better off with a pub lunch in saffron walden or a mooch around duxford, at least you are not far from the airport and no traffic to worry about.

Yes. It will almost certainly be quicker than driving in and you'll know how long it takes so can allow enough time to get back. Driving will be a lot more uncertain at different times of day.

Going to Stansted via London from Derby seems a bit odd to me. It's not really on the way.

I'd go somewhere else for the day and get the train into London another time

Going via Hendon only adds about 30 minutes.

Are there any places much closer to the centre than Hendon where it'll be easy to park for free (bearing in mind it will be a Sunday) to get the tube in?

Worth checking for tube closures before you decide as the Northern Line is often affected at weekends. Check www.tfl.gov.uk

Stansted Express into London Liverpool Street? Then you are parked up at airport and know how much time you have. Gives you less time in the car. Airport parking though.
+1 Duxford
or Cambridge
Edit: Footflaps has a state of the art man shed in Cambridge, well worth trying to see it before it gets established on the tourist trail.

Park at Stanstead, then train down into London. Stanstead Express from Liverpool st only takes 45 mins or so. That way, all you have to do is get back to Stanstead, rather than back to the car and then risk traffic delays to the airport. If there's a crash on the M11 or somewhere, you could end up missing the flight.

It's free parking many places in London on a Sunday. If we drive in we'll park along the top of Hyde Park on Bayswater Road.

And then get on the Tube at Lancaster Gate.

Though I agree with the others, London is a big detour if you are going to Stansted.

🙂

But I'd be more tempted by a shuffle around Cambridge as its quite nice
