Wearing flipflops when not on a beach nor in the privacy of one's back yard should be a punishable offence.

I only started wearing flip flops in march this year at the ripe old age of 41..
It was on holiday in nz and I did a lot of driving in them..
The flip flops have stayed since I got back and it feels weird driving in shoes now..

It's not a stupid thing to do, millions of women around the world drive every day in flip flops and all sorts of other footwear..
Get over yourselves 😆
You'd have to be pretty damn incompetent for flip flops to affect your driving

Seems weird, why not just 'flip' them off and drive barefoot? I love driving barefoot.

Feels a whole lot safer than driving in cycling shoes for the first time in ages the other week, just something you get used to?

Not while driving. Take them off and drive barefoot. Too much risk from them getting caught for me to wear mine

Always drove in flip flops. No different for me than driving in normal trainers. Unless I'm on the bike, flip flops are pretty much all I wear from June to September.

Only drive automatics though which is probably a bit easier in flip flops.

Flip flops are pretty much all I wear from spring to autumn when I'm not at work or on the bike. Wearing some Haibanas Brazilia ones right now. Off to a party later and I can't decide whether to keep these on or go with the classic white ones... Either way I'll be driving there wearing them. Feels perfectly normal.

About one in three motorists admits to having worn the flimsy summer sandals while at the wheel, contributing to 1.4 million near misses, usually as a result of the flip flop getting trapped underneath a pedal. Flip flops are not the only culprits however. While 51% of survey respondents admit to struggling to drive in them, 49% also claimed difficulty behind the wheel, with bare feet, wedge heels, espadrilles and sandals in general.

A quick google of car accidents due to foot wear throws up flip flops sandals high heals and ugg boots and big winter boots. Not much of my trainers or sensible shoes caused me to crash.

I drive a 44 ton artic for a living, last week whilst in the office another driver phoned in.He'd been in a RTA,car ran into the back of his trailer at a set of lights.Reason for the accident? Woman driver got her flip flops stuck on the pedal,at least she ran into a loaded trailer & not something / someone more vulnerable 😯

Increased stopping distances and increased risk of catching and slipping on pedals. Perfectly legal and im sure many people have no problems at all. But all it takes is one foot slip or trapped flip flop and it can all go wrong.

Driving in a tunnel in the BasqueMTB van and trailer with a guest following in their car a couple of years ago. Suddenly they accelerate, swerve out and overtake into the path of an oncoming truck. Me and the truck lock up and we narrowly avoid a three way accident at 60mph through luck as we all did exactly the right thing in relation to the other cars. Pure luck as is was too fast for thinking. Cause? Their flip flop got trapped on the accelerator some way. I never drive in flip flops any more.

I'm guessing that the naysayers, as well as looking at very dodgy data and saying 'oh it must be true because look, numbers' without actually stopping to apply any thought to whether those numbers actually mean anything, as well as being cretinous and moronic enough to misinterpret data in a bid to support your duff argument, I'm guessing you also are shit drivers who don't wear flip flops..

So talking out your arses

Why? Please enlighten me as to why flip flops mean your car cannot stop as quickly - do they stop you applying as much pedal pressure? No.
Slipping on pedals? Never had that, again why should a flip flop slip off a pedal more than another shoe? I would have thought a shiny leather shoe would be worse and that's before we start talking about walking in show/ice before driving.

I can barely walk in flip flops, let alone drive in them. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Driving barefoot is dirty. I have done this 🙂

yes please.... is the underside of a flip flop more slippery (which is what I'm talking about)?

Are you just being a naughty pedant? 😀

Anything that can get in the way of a pedal is the issue and a flip flop has potential to deliver more than downward pressure, plus it's larger than the silhouette of a normal shoe....or a sexy naked foot.

That's about it I think.

Foot coming out of flip flop pedals getting between flip flop and foot when moving between pedals. Reduced braking distance due to time it takes to move feet between pedals with flip flop stuck.

Some people are awesome, they can drive in anything from fluffy slippers to ski boots.

Then there are some people that really shouldn't be driving.
They only just sneaked through the test ,and wearing anything other than sensible footwear just makes them an accident waiting to happen.

😉

It doesn't, but that's not the issue. It's the security of fit between the flip flop and the foot that is the issue.

What planet are you on?

You've got to be seriously retarded to fail to operate a ****ing flip-flop competently..

Seriously.. Seriously.. I've mastered the technique to pilot a hurtling piece of motorised heavy machinery, but somehow I struggle with the most basic design of footwear!!?

Pffffffft

The first week that I passed my test I decided to reposition the car in the multi story carpark where I lived. The flipflop formed a perfect U/bent back on itself and almost caused me to slam the car into a concrete block 2-3m's infront.

Never again.

People say 'what if you have a pebble between your barefoot and the pedal (where did that come from then?!).

Barefoot is best.

Its people in heals or heavy boots that arent in the best control IMO.

I think it is illegal to drive in bare feet as well...apparently they have less grip than a shoe on the pedals...

Ok parksie you genius.. What about all the billions of people in other countries where flip-flops are the preferred footwear?

Get a grip sonny

The fact that hora's crashed in flip-flops only illustrates my point..

Ive never had a crash, driven all kinds of car and trucks in many different countries on road off road on track. Never worn flip flops to drive. Coincidence i think not.

Race and rally drivers want optimum performance.. I'm just pootling to the shops or doing the school run, driving back from the beach or the pub..

I don't need optimum performance from a driving shoe..
flip flops don't increase the risk.. Idiots increase the risk

only an idiot can fail to operate a pair of flip flops

Hmm well don't do it in Spain or you'll get a nasty fine.

Personally I don't think you can drive properly with something than easily slips off your foot ...

Pootling about fine until someone does something silly and you need to react quick.

I prefer it when people steering a ton and a half of steel are wearing sensible footwear tbh.

I think the UK is the only country in the whole widest world to call them flip-flops.

Thongs, gentlemen please. Thongs, not flip-flops.

Now if you'd like to replace the words and re-read the thread, some people like to drive in thongs, some don't and some like it bare[s]back[/s]foot...

I was just interested because I did it this afternoon, and I didn't like the way they move about under my feet.

I managed to circumnavigate the extra traffic around maidstone caused by Operation Stack, without maiming anyone, but think I feel happier wearing trainers or the like.

I wear Cool Corporation flip flops which are the most comfy thing I've ever worn . Downside is though they are "oversized" for sand wear and are almost SIX INCHES wide . I can press two pedals at once in the car so a definately no no .

A driver was wearing flip flops when he crashed into a lollipop lady and pupils on a school crossing in south Wales, a court has heard.
But under questioning, Robert Bell, 62, said he regularly wore them and that would not have impaired his driving.

"I remember seeing the driver's eyes were wide open and gripping his hands tight on the steering wheel. It was all happening so fast.

Someone somewhere crashed a car when their foot slipped off a pedal.. They weren't wearing flip flops, therefore we shouldn't drive without flip flops..

this is your logic parksie

Some people crash because they are wearing flip flops other people crash despite wearing appropriate footwear. The difference might be a bit subtle for some.

Wearing something that easily slips off your feet to drive is idiotic.
Anyone defending this idiocy should never be allowed to drive.

A foot in a shoe slipping off a pedal is different to a flip flop jamming a throttle open because its come off and got wedged. Flip flops introduce a unnecesary risk that can be avoided by wearing more appropriate foot wear. Im not saying you absolutely will crash because your wearing flip flops just that the risk of you crashing is increased because you drive wearing them.

flip flopps?

Pah try driving in Alpinestar MX boots.
No feeling whatsoever from the sole and about 0.0003 degrees ankle movement. Your right foot pushes the brake and accelerator at the same time and your left foot pushes the clutch and brake at the same time.

It's fine as long as you keep your helmet on though. 😛

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Driving with anything other than a flat shoe can be very dangerous. Flip-flops have killed before. In 2011, three people died when a woman driving a Toyota Highlander lost control of her vehicle after her flip-flop got caught under the accelerator. Wearing flip-flops can raise your risk of a serious crash.

I seem to remember it being blamed on a coughing fit or a fainting it, not the flip flops. But don't let the fact that people almost died stop you from making vacuous connections.

Ahem

District Judge Bodfan Jenkins agreed that the defendant had been coughing - but not badly enough that it caused him to pass out.

He said: “You failed to deal with it properly and as a result your foot ended up on the throttle instead of the brake.

“Your misjudgment had horrendous consequences.

“This is a tragic case for all those involved.”

Ok so not blamed entirely on flip flops but not entirely due to coughing.

Blamed on flip flops by prosecution quotes which have been attributed to be me being vacuous. And not caring that people were nearly killed.

Someone was killed

I bet there are many more crashes caused by blokes gawping at the lovely ladies in their summer notmuchness than there are by flip flops.

TBH if your flip flops fall off your feet while driving then your feet are on the wrong way 8)

Driving in flip flops seems to me to be a typical over-confidence/inability to properly assess risk issue which represents a lot of people's driving.

On related note, if you're overweight (therefore can't move quickly) and wearing flipflops, don't walk out in front of a car coming down the hill 30+mph... I really thought he has going to get hit, trying to speed-shuffle across as he realised he'd misjudged the speed of the car 😯
