We're off to York for the weekend, heading up this evening, setting off from Disley about 17:00.

Google gives two options - M60/M62 to M1 at Leeds, or Glossop/Woodhead to M1 at Barnsley, and seems to prefer the latter. Both pretty much the same journey time.

What's likely to be better, or at least less rubbish, traffic wise? Or shall I just fire up Google Maps and let it do it's thing?

Google maps as you start off. Will find the better journey based on current traffic conditions. As your last point, always. Even for simple journeys like my daily commute.

I'd be going M60/62 at that time of day ATM - possibly easier in the dark.

Personally I find Woodhead a nicer drive, but only on either a clear night or a dry day. Any other conditions and it's just not pleasant.

That's a journey I do fairly regularly - my sister lives near York and I'm only just down the road from you.

I just fire up Google Maps and let it do its thing. It's taken me several different ways in the past. Woodhead can be nice at crack of dawn on a dry day but most of the time there's a high probability of being stuck behind 2 or 3 lorries...

Your issue will be Marple/Bredbury getting to the M60, then any shenanigans on route. I usually do 60/62, but let google decide for you !

From High Lane, we always drive Glossop/Crowden/Woodhead and never had an issue with traffic when visiting the sister in law.

When they visit us, the always come M62/M60 and it seems a much of a muchness if traffic's good.

Yeah. at that time from your place I'd be doing hayfield/glossop/crowden, avoid Marple & stockport

Did the journey last night slow in patches due to road works - down to single lane at one section. This was late after the Luton game at Preston.

Isn't the Woodhead slightly in the wrong direction?

I'd be going M60/M62, probably going anticlockwise and through Chadderton and on at J20.

No, just spits you out on the M1 a junction or two below the M62. Nice and easy really.

He's probably stuck on the A64 near Tadcaster. That road is a pain on a good day
